PROLOGUE
THREE MEN WALKED INTO a room and slammed the door closed. They sat down and stared at one another for the next few minutes. No words were uttered, just a constant gaze of frustration. As the atmosphere of anger grew thick, Jack cleared his throat and rose from the table.
Steve Williams, the CMO at the firm, and Tom Credon, crossed their arms and frowned in his direction.
With his palms upward, Jack smiled. I can explain.
Explain what?
Steve asked. How you humiliated this firm again? This so-called brilliant plan of yours failed.
Jack hunched his shoulders. Did it really? I mean, we did manage to get Mr. Everson arrested. So that should count for something, right?
No,
Tom added. We went along with your plan because it sounded good at the time. You told us that it was foolproof. But we looked like fools and lost another case to Mr. Everson.
Jack held up a finger. Well, actually, it wasn’t Mr. Everson. It was his little protégé. I didn’t think that kid would─
We don’t want to hear your excuses,
Steve interrupted. The bottom line is Mr. Everson is free and now we have a bigger problem─he trained another lawyer to walk in his footsteps.
He slammed the base of his hand on the table. We lost to a rookie! A stupid rookie lawyer beat us!
Tom shook his head and cracked his knuckles. Is there anything we can do to stop the embarrassment of constant loosing?
He frowned. By the way, where is that missionary that we paid? She betrayed us. She was supposed to help us destroy Everson.
I don’t know,
Jack said. She disappeared after the trial. I sent someone by her mother’s house, and no one was there.
He exhaled and touched his chest. Ok, I failed this time. I thought my plan was a sure thing.
Steve pressed his fingers into his eyes. We better come up with a good explanation because the partners are coming. Dave and Burg call me this morning.
Jack and Tom’s eyes widened. What?
Steve blew out a long breath. They called me on my way to the office this morning.
Wh ... What did they say?
Tom asked, stuttering.
They brought up the fact that we cost this company millions during the Ganvis trial. They also spoke about the Newberry trial and of course the Everson trial.
Jack inhaled and exhaled like a raging bull. You didn’t tell them it was my fault, right?
Steve shook his head. They did all the talking. Our names came up too. I don’t know when they’re coming. It could be today, tomorrow, next month, or next year.
Tom sat back in the chair. They have never come to the firm in years. This is not good.
Steve leaned forward. We can’t outrun this one. They’re coming.
The intercom buzzed.
All the partners jumped and stared at the intercom.
Jack rushed over and pressed the button.Yes, Cindy?
Sir, the partners are here.
"Ok. I’ll be right down.
Once he made it down to the lobby, two men wearing dark blue suits stood next to the receptionist.
He rushed forward. Hello, sirs.
Dave gave him a stern frown. Where are the rest of them?
Jack pointed. Upstairs in the boardroom.
They walk past him to the elevator.
When they made it upstairs, the partners pushed opened the door and entered the room. Steve and Tom jumped to their feet and slightly bowed their head.
Burg took off his jacket and placed it on the leather couch by the door. The muscles in his arms pressed against the fibers of the white shirt as if it was tattooed. He had a large, hovering frame, with muscles everywhere. His skin was dull brownish yellow. He walked over to the table near the window, picked up a vase, and threw it toward Steve and Tom.
They immediately ducked as the vase slammed against the wall behind them. Jack trembled, standing by the door.
I didn’t tell you to move,
he barked. You’re lucky that’s all I threw.
Dave smiled. He was the same size, minus the muscles and rage. Coffee-colored skin, dark hair, and no facial hair.
Burg, my dear brother, let’s be reasonable.
Reasonable?
Burg pointed and frowned. These imbeciles cost us millions! We had the Ganvis case won. That location would’ve boosted up our revenue. We had to shut down an outsourcing operation because of them. All of our gun shipments, pharmaceuticals, and money laundering businesses were cancelled. We lost our anchor. Sheriff Rudolph was arrested on behalf of Mr. Everson.
He balled his fists and stared at them one by one. I’m getting sick to my stomach just looking at you. I should beat you until my first go numb ... or until my hand falls off.
He exhaled and walked toward them. The heck with it. I’ll do what I feel.
Dave stepped in front of him and braced him with the palms of his hands. Burg, please calm down. I understand your frustration but let’s handle this situation a different way.
He walked over, picked up the jacket off the couch and passed it. We’ve traveled a long way. Let’s at least hear them out.
Burg snatched his jacket and sat down in one of the head chairs.
Dave followed with a bright smile.
Please, not all at once, but which one of you want to explain how you cost us millions?
He crossed his legs and interlocked his fingers. Start with the Ganvis case. We want to hear your grand explanation.
No one said a word.
Dave grinned and pointed. Steve, care to explain?
Steve’s chin sunk to his chest. No sir. We don’t have an excuse. We failed.
Burg slammed his hands massive down on the table. The sound bounced off the walls in the room. Failed is an understatement! We demand answers! We is going to take the blame? If I don’t get an answer, I’ll pick one of you.
