The Waiting Room of Death - Gert Höglund

    Preface

The book that you are holding in your hands right now is a book based on a true story, as it is said in the beginning of several other books and movies. I do not know if this statement is true all of the times it is stated, some stories almost seems too good to be true, but I can assure you that every word you are about to read in this book have happened in real life. This is of course my perceptions of the events, but everything regarding the diseases are documented in the medical journals. So what makes an amateur without any writing experience write this kind of book without any knowledge of if it will ever be published? The ones that have heard my story have told me to write a book about everything I have been through, because they believe that it can bring comfort to both sufferers and their relatives. Above all I really needed to write it all down to be able to process, get some distance and move on with my life. Since you are now reading these words, it means that a publisher have actually believed that it has something to give to more than just me.

The book is about never giving up, even if everything seems hopeless. Even if the fight against authorities, doctors and hospital managements, well everything I have been fighting against during this time seems like David fighting Goliath. It is also about, and this is the theme of the book, that I have been doubting the fact that there is someone or something out there that have total control of what we do on earth and that decides when something will happen and why, even when it is time for us to leave this life on earth. Today I have been convinced that there really is something after this life we are living.

This book is mainly dedicated to my wife that has had a tougher time than me in a lot of situations, and to my children. All relatives to seriously ill people deserves credit. Your situation is very difficult with a suffering that no one who has not experienced it themselves can even imagine. Not knowing what is going to happen, the feeling of not being able to influence the situation. I also want to pay tribute to all the people working in healthcare, all of these fantastic people. During all the years that I have spent in different hospitals as a patient, I have had the pleasure to get to know a lot of these wonderful people.

Among other things, this book will include unexplainable situations and experiences that I have been through, that either doctors or other hospital staff can explain even though they were there with me. I have had doubts, but now I have clarity.

    Chapter 1

I am a 63 year old married man with three adult children. Since 25 years I am married for a second time with Ewa. Ewa and I do not have any children in common, but we have two dogs that have become our children. This is my story.

The year was 1991. I were 41 years old, worked as a CEO of a major company and was on the board of another company in the same group. Earlier I had worked for this company for ten years, both as a supervisor and in higher positions, until I had enough of it and moved to a large American company in the computer industry. Even there I stayed for ten years before I felt the need for a change again and started working for one of the larger department stores in Stockholm. I were a member of the store management and had a managerial position. That job came to be the nicest one I have ever had and I ended up working there for a couple of years. Then an acquaintance from the first company offered me the post of Vice President and I accepted the offer.

This job meant long and stressful days without any possibility of taking it easy. The CEO was a very driven person and in the position of vice president, I got to deal with all uncomfortable things like reassigning personal and handle complaints. I usually saved the situation and at times we got to expand instead of laying off staff. I had really competent managers working for me, but had a difficult time delegating. As a result of this, I ended up getting more and more things on my desk as time went. I smoked and working out was only for others, myself I had no time for it. The company I worked for had several locations in the Stockholm area. A lot of employees worked in shifts and we had supervisors who went out to them, but I quickly understood that it was really appreciated when I, from management, came for a visit at night to sit down and talk to them.

My days were totally filled with visits at customers since I found that these visits were greatly appreciated among our customers. At this time it was not that common for someone from management to go to customers for coffee or lunch, just to talk generally and not just about the assignment. Usually one of the supervisors met the customer and mostly to discuss things that needed to change or if something had gone wrong. As soon as my customers mentioned even the smallest thing that they found annoying, I went back to the office and corrected it before it blew up to a big issue.

At Christmastime it was time to take our customers out to Christmas lunches and during a two weeks period I went out for two lunches a day. First one at lunchtime and then again in the afternoon. After work I came home from the office just long enough to kiss my wife, take a cup of coffee and change my costume, then I went back out again for Christmas dinner with yet another customer. This was the way it was every Christmas and I were not unique in any way, a lot of managers spent the weeks before Christmas in the same way. On top of this, we also went out for Christmas lunches with our staff, and these were divided in several different occasions to fit in to their various schedules. I didn´t like to drink alcohol during all these lunches and dinners, but a lot of unhealthy food, irregular mealtimes, stress, responsibility, late nights, early mornings and smoking was not at all good for my body. But hey, when you are young and immortal, career and money is what´s important.

I felt exhausted and it was no secret that I were neglecting my wife. She wanted us to go abroad
