My General Superintendent –Rev. Prof. Paul Emeka and other members of the executive committee has been a great source of motivation and encouragement to me. The prayers, supports and encouragement I receive from my District Superintendent-Rev Audu Yaro and other members of Kano District presbytery are quite appreciated.

I appreciate the company and support of Rev. Johnkessly Azu and family, my assistant pastor –Pastor Sunday Omhenimhen and family, the deacon board and the entire members of Assemblies of God church 34 Aba Road, Kano. My beloved wife Mrs. Blessing U. Orji and our children have been very supportive. Due to human limitations, time and space, I may not be able to mention the names of everyone that contributed towards the realization of this dream. My prayer and desire is that God should bless and reward everyone that supported in any way towards the realization of this work and grant you the privilege and grace of spending eternity with Him in heaven.

    Things to Note about Yokes

A yoke is primarily a wooden bar which is used to draft two animals especially oxen. They are joined at their necks for working together. They may be used for drowning a load or pulling a plow. In the Bible, yoke is used to picture something which affects one in various ways. This includes things that affect man’s health, resources, family and conditions generally around him. We shall consider the spiritual implications of yoke to see how it affects one.

In Bible times, when a city is conquered in battle the war captives are then taken as slaves to the town of their captors. They are yoked to prevent them from escaping on the way as they lead them to the home town of their captors. Joseph was yoked in the same way when he was lead to slavery after his brothers sold him to the Ishmaelite. The Bible says and he sent a man before them — Joseph, sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with shackles; his neck was put in irons, (Psalms 105:17 – 18 NIV). The scripture further reveal that …in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor" (Isaiah 9:4 NIV).

Yoke is a Symbol of Slavery

A yoke is an emblem of slavery. Slavery is one of the spiritual implications of yoke. Slavery is one of the worst conditions one could find himself. A slave is a property of another person. A slave works at the dictate of the master, whether the condition is favorable or not. A slave works so hard and has little or nothing to show for it. A slave does not make his own choice. His choice is subject to the approval of the master. A slave works so hard but receives little or no recognition, reward or payment for his inputs and efforts. He puts in great effort but another receives the glory, reward and benefit.

One may feel that he or she is not physically bound or subjected to hard labor by any one yet the person may still be under the manipulation or slavery by forces he cannot explain. Spiritual slavery affects ones moral and spiritual life. There are people who are struggling with different habits and lifestyles which they found to be beyond their ability to control. The Bible says in Romans 7:21-23 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members (NIV). One may labor under this slavery throughout his life time except if there is supernatural intervention.

Though the children of Israel were God’s people, yet they experienced moments of slavery. They were forced into slavery in Egypt which was not as a result of losing in a battle but as a result of envy and evil policy. The Scripture says in Exodus 1:8-11 Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.Look, he said to his people, the Israelites have become much too numerous for us. Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country. So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh (NIV). Some children of God could be suffering ignorantly under the yoke of their enemies. Their enemies could enslave them spiritually, suppressing their progress and frustrating their efforts. They could also pose some limits on them which will cause the person to groan in pains. Exodus 1:14 says They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly (NIV). In most cases the people believe that such yokes come from God but this is contrary to God’s word. God does not inflict anyone with evil.

Slavery has to do with bondage. It denies one of the freedoms he or she supposes to enjoy. Slavery reduces one to the barest minimal and restricts his freedom and progress in several ways. Slavery denies one the freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of worship etc. Anything that restricts ones freedom in the basic issues of life affects the person (1Timothy 6:1).
