The Golden Dragon - Bo Bartock

    Chapter 1

    Passages of Time

In the years since they had fought the huge battle against the creature the Glen had been happy and prosperous.   Ashland and Ashland Village had grown nicely.  Those of Mixed Specie were grateful to have a place to call home.  They were some the best workers in either end of the kingdoms.  Also, the most loyal to their King and Queen.

With things working so well, Ivy had begun to keep a journal.  She wanted a record to remember their lives by.  She started it the day after the big battle.  She was good at recording the marriages and births of all their friends and subjects she learned of.

She and Ash had just returned to their suite from celebrating the nuptials of their Personal Secretaries, Ty-Reese Rao to Sophia La Reach, aka Ty and Soapy.  Ivy was so pleased they had fallen in love.  They were both so good at their jobs that she and Ash had been afraid they would go elsewhere to work.   She finished her entry and was ready to turn in for the night.  Turning, she sees Ash is already asleep.  It had been a full day for them both.  She yawns and finds her way to bed, going right to sleep.

This morning, they know what their schedules are, they are sharing breakfast with Ivy’s parents down in the Glen.  Her Mother had issued the invite the day before, in person.  They had learned that meant it was as close to a command as she would ever give to them.  Ivy still refused to move along with-out her first cup of coffee.  Tink never failed to amaze her.  She always knew what Ivy wanted before she did at times.  They too, had grown closer over time.  It didn’t matter that her mother would have a pot waiting, she needed Tink’s special blend to get started.  Cup finished; they were off.  Ivy can smell the coffee before they enter the room.  Breezing into the room she greets her parents with hugs and kisses.  She then notices that Shamus and Honeysuckle are there too.  She missed seeing more of them.  They had been enjoying being mated, spending all their time together.  She rushed around the table to give her "Fairy God-Mother a warm hug.  Honeysuckle stood up to hug Ivy.  No sooner did she wrap her arms around her friend, she jerked back and looked deep into Honeysuckle’s eyes.  She very softly asked, Honey, is it true?  Honeysuckle knew what she was asking and answered her with a slight nod.  She hugged her again and whispered to her, shhhh, haven’t told anyone yet."  Ivy hugs her a bit tighter and smiles back at her.  She gives Shamus a hug too.  Ash had been making the rounds of the table himself.  He started in the opposite direction of Ivy so they would finish up at their places.  He quickly noticed something sharp-eyed Ivy hadn’t noticed.  The Queen Mother was only drinking tea.  He wondered?

Ivy and Ash had kept an eye on each other so they ended their rounds at the same time.  Ash held her chair and they took their places. The castle staff worked like a well-oiled machine.  As they sat, food was arriving to the table.  Ivy was more than ready for her second cup of coffee.  Mother, how is the coffee this morning?  I don’t know Sweetie; I haven’t had any.  Ivy’s head snapped up as she made eye contact with her mother in time to see her smile and give the tiniest of nods to her unasked question.  Schooling her features, Ivy smiles and said, I certainly need a second cup, I will taste it.  Ivy sat there stirring and stirring and stirring her cup lost in thought until Ash nudge her leg under the table.    She instantly recalled where she was an put down her spoon.  She kept her eyes on her plate and ate so she wouldn’t need to speak as she adjusted herself to what she now knew.  Both her Mother and Honeysuckle were both expecting and neither one knew of the others condition. She had a fleeting thought of when might it be her turn, but wasn’t bothered by it.   Having had her second cup now, she adjusted herself in the chair for comfort as she waited for the morning’s entertainment to happen!  Ash didn’t know of Honeysuckle, but he had guessed on the Queen Mother.  He too found himself looking forward to the coming announcement.   They didn’t have to wait long.

Shamus was standing up but so was Man-cell.  They both had spoons and glasses in their hands, tapping on them and calling
