About this ebook

Anna Jackson was happy. Her life had always been perfect. In Southern Plains, New South Wales, where she lived with her parents, two homesteads sat amid the green pastures. Anna’s family had built their house when they purchased the property years ago. In the other lived Anna’s aunt and uncle, and her cousin Mollie. For as long as Anna could remember, Zach Sinclair had been a part of her life, too, and she hoped one day they might be together. But the Jackson and Sinclair families were divided by an ancient feud, and the Jackson family had built itself around secrets. Such secrets have a way of coming out, and when they do so in the midst of tragedy, no one is prepared for the outcome. Zach and Anna realise the relationship they have pinned their hopes on could be destroyed by what lies beneath the years of deceit. They believe their love is forever, but can it really withstand the truth?

I love to write and see a story grow, to watch the characters come to life. Love is all around us, and it is eternal. It comes in many forms, as can our soulmates.

This book is my first, and I hope not my last. I dedicate it to those I love. I hope you have as much fun reading as I did writing it.

    Now

Circumstances in life sometimes alter the path our choices take us on, and before we know it things spiral quickly out of our control. As much as we might try to get events back in hand and choose our own path, something or someone changes our future forever.

Anna Jackson sat outside on the verandah; her mind wandered back to a time when her heart was full of hope and happiness. Now all she felt was confusion and sadness, and she sat quietly listening to the traffic in the street and the occasional noises from the pets.

This was now her future. She had arrived about four months ago and taken this role as a part-time carer and jack of all trades for a veterinary practice in Sydney. The premises had been an old home, which over time had been renovated into very functional quarters for the practice. They had left the verandah as a feature, and on a warm day it was the perfect place just to sit and ponder life.

She’d been fortunate to find a vacancy in the practice: the doctors were nice, and they were happy to let her do her work without too much interaction. Anna did not want to talk about herself or her life.

Anna’s days were long and busy, the doctors in the practice forever having something for her to do. They often wondered about the young woman they had hired, as she offered no chatter to give them any sign of where she had come from. She was always working, and when the day’s end came, off she went.

One young vet, Andrew, was particularly curious to get to know her, finding her quietness intriguing.

Anna walked out of the back room where the animals were kept, and Andrew looked up at her. He smiled as she entered the room, and asked her how her weekend was. Anna offered small talk but no details. Andrew saw sadness in her eyes, and as he watched her walk away, he could tell that she had been hurt.

Later in the day, when Anna sat outside under the porch eating her lunch, Andrew sat beside her. As she looked up, she saw a smile creep onto his face and she felt, for the first time in a long time, the twitch of a smile on her own lips.

They ate together in silence for a while, and then Andrew asked her if she would like to come on his rounds with him. Anna nodded. He told her he would meet her out front in an hour.

What was it he found interesting about this lovely young woman? What was she, about twenty-four? And she had haunting, dark eyes, tinged with sadness. Andrew found her mysterious, and he liked that about her. He knew that if he was to get anywhere with her, he would have to take his time getting to know her.
