    Introduction

Let us get to the point right off the mark... you are reading this because you want better results in your life.

You want more control in the outcomes, especially when it comes to personal and professional relationships. And, you may have the perception that by being able to read and analyze people better, you will get these results.

The issue with that perception is that, by trying to create a more authoritative and commanding presence for yourself, you actually risk pushing people further away.

A true leader is one of compassion and empathy, understanding and acceptance. A true leader is one of firm resolve for his or her values, but with flexibility to listen to and appreciate the values of others – even if they are conflicting.

True leadership, discussed towards the end of this book, is less about commanding others and more about the way others feel compelled to follow your lead naturally.

True leadership involves an awareness of your environment, the people and personalities with which you interact, and your own self.

True leadership can be attained by anyone who is willing to create a shift in their internal paradigm with respect to communication and interaction.

If you are looking to develop better relationships, to command more attention, and develop loyal friends, families, and followers, you have to improve the way you give and receive in conversation with others.

We have also all had a time in our life where we were told something, but our gut suggested to us that may not be the (whole) truth.

When this happens in person, it is generally due to a dichotomy between the verbal (words being spoken) and non-verbal (gestures, postures, and facial expressions) communication taking place.

Effective communication is obtained not only through truth from the speaker and empathy, emotional understanding, and open-mindedness from the listener, but also through correlated non-verbal communication.

The path to better understanding another person (and, ensuring they better understand you) is through effective communication. And, effective communication takes practice, learning, willingness, and – most importantly – compassion and empathy.

To be able to read another person effectively – especially, someone you care about – is one of the best ways to ensure you are both getting what you want out of the relationship.

However, this is not just limited to intimate interactions. By effectively reading, analyzing, and understanding others – even acquaintances – you will find that you may be better able to react to a situation in order to obtain the results you want, by having an understanding of what they
