    Chapter 1

Once upon a time, a skinny little kitten limped down a shadowy dirt road. The misty rain falling from the gray sky soaked the young cat to the bone. Even though the kitten’s fur was wet and raindrops hung off each of his whiskers and even the tips of his ears, he ignored all that for he was sure he was close. Close to what he had been searching for a very, very, very long time.

    What?

What was he searching for? Well, you’ll just have to read through the story to find out now, won’t you? It wouldn’t be any fun if I gave away parts of the story early.

Now, where was I … oh yes …

The kitten was soaked to the skin, and much, much, much more, but a tiny grin appeared on his face as he spied a big old yellow house that sat on a hill. The kitten stopped and sighed before whispering to himself, Calix, you can feel the magic from that big old yellow house and the woods all around it from here. Now, hopefully, after all this time this place will have the one I need to help me out of my problem. Of course, anyone standing nearby would have just heard him meow. Anyone, that is, except that special person he was looking for.

The kitten sighed again before he slowly moved down the road toward the big …

    What?

You don’t believe this kitten could talk? Well, you’ll just have to take my word for it. He really could talk. He wasn’t just any ordinary kitten, you see, but it took someone very special to hear him, as I said, and you will see that as we go along in the story.

Soon the kitten reached the front porch of the big old yellow house. He stopped and sniffed the air as the mist turned to heavy rain. He could feel the magic that poured from the big old yellow house. And he was getting even wetter than before if that was possible. He hesitated for a second before sighing once more and climbed the stairs. This kitten had been searching for a very, very, very long time for a certain kind of magical person and had been disappointed so many times before in his travels.

The kitten stood on the porch, his eyes taking in everything around him. There was a long porch swing, with big fluffy pillows and cushions to the right of the door. Up in the corner of the eaves, there was an old sparrow’s nest. Just outside the door were two pairs of boots. One rather large pair and one rather small pair.

The kitten stalked over to the smaller boots, sniffed, and smiled. Then smiled some more as he shook from a tiny sneeze. Well, Calix, maybe you have found what you have been looking for so long, the kitten whispered just before a bigger sneeze than before erupted from his nose and tiny raindrops flew in the air as his body shook.

The kitten sniffled as he walked over to the porch swing and, with a little jump, hopped up on the cushions. He looked over the back of the swing into the darkened window behind it. The
