Chapter 1
Once upon a time, there was a big forest that grew at the foot of the mountains. That looked out over a big old yellow house that sat on a small hill. That overlooked the big blue water. The forest at the foot of the mountain is very special as you will see in our story.
. . .
Why was it special you ask?
. . .
Well, these woods were special for two reasons. The first was that it was full of very tall pines trees that had been around for a very, very long time. In fact, the biggest, widest tree in the center of the forest was there before the first people ever came to this land. The second reason was that these trees still held an old ancient magic within them.
In the woods lived many magical creatures. There was a troll that lived under an old wooden bridge, and a family of fairies lived in a flower-filled clearing at one end of the trees to name just a couple. But the biggest of all the creatures that lived in this magical forest was a purple dragon.
Now, I’m sure that you know that some of these creatures can be very nice and helpful – like fairies when you are lost in the woods. Or can cause all kinds of mischief – like trolls that can get you lost for days when you are only out for a quick stroll. Then there is the dragon who will ignore people even when they are loud and trample nosily under the trees. So let’s read on . . .
Now on this morning, the warm late summer sun was rising on a cloudless day. Well, almost cloudless for there was one lone cloud racing the sun as it peeked over the mountain. It had been raining the last two days. It rained so hard that even under the thick trees in the woods the ground was wet and muddy. So, all the creatures in the forest were happy to see the bright sun rising this morning.
Now, this story is about one of the creatures in these magical woods . . .
. . .
What was that? Which creature is the story about? Why it’s about the purple dragon, of course. That’s why the book is named "Dragon in the Woods", silly.
The dragon was sleeping twitchily as the sun came over the mountains and the warm sunbeams touched her purple scales. She .
