Once upon a time, there was a monster. A monster that lived under a bed...
. . .
What? What was that?
. . .
No. This monster isn’t under your bed, silly.
. . .
What? Of course, I’m sure. Go and peek under your bed. I’ll wait.
. . .
Are you back? Good. See? No monster. Now sit down and relax in your favorite chair. I’m going to tell you about an adventure.
. . .
What adventure? Why the adventure about one little girl who found a monster under her bed and a secret about herself. Because, of course, that is what good storytellers do.
Now, where was I? Oh, yes, let’s start the story in a different way so you don’t worry about a monster under your bed.
Once upon a time, there was a big old yellow house. Now you know that this is going to be a good adventure because all the good ones start out ‘once upon a time’. So, ours must be an extra good adventure since we started it out like that twice.
The big old yellow house sat at the end of a small town. The small town sat on a small hill. The small hill sat at the edge of the woods. The woods grew at the foot of the mountains. The mountains looked out over a big blue water.
The big old yellow house leaned a little to the left. Its tall red brick chimney leaned a little to the right. In the rafters above the porch, a family of sparrows nested. Under the porch, a family of possum played. But the best thing about that big old yellow house was that it was special.
. . .
What was so special about it? Well, you just keep reading and you’ll see. Remember this is an extra good adventure.
The big old yellow house had been in the same family for a very long time. Like the hill that it sat on. Like the trees around it. This family had always loved the big old yellow house, and how special it was. For the big old yellow house was magical.
. . .
Yes, I know there are lots and lots of magical houses. Some magical houses are not nice and can play tricks on you. Some magical houses only have their magic during Halloween. But the big old yellow house had its magic all year long and was very nice to its family.
The big old yellow house had been empty for years. Well, not completely empty but that is for later in the story. The family had moved out of the house when their little girl had grown up and moved away. But today was going to be different for the big old yellow house. It was a special day.
. . .
What is so special about today you ask? Why today is the day that our story starts. What story? Why the story about the family that moved back into the big old yellow house. The story about
