Oh my god! Karen whispered to her best friend and coworker, Georgia. Who is that? She's gorgeous.

Karen pointed to a brunette standing in the cafeteria sandwich line. Tall and lean, the woman's leg muscles rippled as she moved up the line. Karen watched as the stranger's biceps popped when she reached for her food.

Wipe the drool from your chin, Karen. Georgia said. That's Joan. She's the new technical writer they hired last week.

    She's stunning.

That's true. Look how the engineers just fall all over themselves trying to be next to her.

Karen watched as a couple of geeky guys jockeyed themselves into the sandwich line next to Joan, trying to move into a position where she would notice them.

    Dorks, Karen said.

You're one to talk, Karen. You would do the same if you had the guts.

I didn't mean it in a bad way. Merely a statement of truth.

Georgia motioned to the new person. Hey Joan, do you want to sit with us?

Karen choked on her iced tea. Georgia! she whispered tersely. You did that on purpose.

Of course! Georgia said, eyes sparkling with mischief.

Joan picked up her tray and headed towards them. Karen wondered if she could escape without Joan noticing, but Joan caught her gaze and smiled. Karen's stomach flipped. Joan's big brown eyes wouldn't let her go.

Hi, I'm Joan. I just started here last week. Joan stuck her hand out.

Karen took Joan's hand and shook it. Hi. I'm... I'm...

This is Karen, Georgia said, pointing toward her best friend. Sometimes she has trouble with her nouns.

What? Joan and Karen asked at the same time.

Estrogen, Georgia said. Lack of estrogen can cause a woman to lose her words.

Georgia, shut up! Karen said, her face hot and red with embarrassment.

See? She's having a hot flash, Georgia said, fanning Karen with her hands.

Stop it, Georgia! Karen said, catching Georgia's hands in her own. I've got to get back to work. Nice meeting you, Joan.

As Karen stood up to leave, she turned too quickly and knocked her drink off the table and into Joan's lap.

Shit! Karen said. I'm so sorry! Here, let me get some napkins!

Karen grabbed a handful of napkins and started mopping up the liquid on Joan's jeans. Suddenly she noticed that she had moved up from Joan's thighs and was dabbing at Joan's groin area.

    Oh no. I'm sorry. I didn't mean...

Best thing that's happened to me all day, Joan said, smiling at Karen. Don't worry about these jeans. They wash up just fine.

Karen walked away as quickly as she could. Could that have gone any worse? she muttered under her breath. I'm thinking no.

    Knock, knock!

Karen looked up from her monitor to see Joan standing in her cube doorway.

Hi! How are your pants? Karen asked.

Joan laughed. They're fine. Totally. See? Almost dry. Joan pulled at the fabric around her crotch to show Karen how much the wet spot had receded.

That came out wrong, Karen said, blushing. Sorry I ruined your jeans. What can I do for you?

They say you are the guru of the department.

They lie. I'm more like the old fart of the department.

Somehow, I believe them and not you, Joan said. Georgia said to find you and ask you about an issue I found in the documentation.

Sit down, Karen said, pulling up a guest chair. Let's see what we've got.

So I hear that Jack has a party on Friday night, Joan said as they wrapped up their discussion.

Yeah, he has one every couple of months.

    Do you go?

I used to. But I haven't in a long time.

    Why not?

"I don't drink much anymore, and I see these people all day every day and
