Chapter 1. Want My Baby Back

Joanna was startled awake by the high shrill of the phone next to her bed. Running fingers over her wide-opened eyes, she peered at the red-lit clock, as darkness bore through the frosty windows of Joanna and Paul’s bedroom in Delano Minnesota.

Fumbling for the phone she thought, Six, man, who in the world would be calling this early? Hello," She croaked clearing her throat.

You have my child and I’m going to get back what belongs to me. Joanna sat up with a jolt! Her heart pounded as she recognized the muffled eerie voice of her ex-husband, Greg.

She bolted up screaming at him. You’ll never get my child! She slammed the phone back in its cradle. She hissed through clinched teeth. Going to kill that man!

Paul woke with a start rubbing his dark eyes. Whoa. Seeing Joanna’s anger, he gently pulled her golden curly brown hair from her eyes and placed his muscular arms around her, held her trembling body close to his. Okay calm down and start from the beginning. Who was that on the phone? Who’re you going to kill?

She held her throbbing head as bile rose to her throat, It was- was my ex-husband, Greg. How in the world did he get out of jail so fast? I thought he got fifteen years for manslaughter and kidnapping. It’s only been eleven years.

I don’t know, but I’m sure going to find out. What did he say, exactly? Paul said using his lawyer’s voice as his lower lip quivered.

He said he’s going to take Carrie Marie away from us. He can’t do that, can he? She’s, our child! We adopted her and raised her from a tiny baby. I’ll never let that monster take her. How in the world did he find out about her, anyway? Her mother never listed him as her father on the birth certificate, before she died. I just don’t understand. Joanna pounded her pillows as tears continued to fall down her face.

Okay, let’s take this one step at a time. First, we must find out if Greg was released from jail. We’ll find out what’s going on. I’ll never let anyone take our children away from us. Promise you that. Paul pulled his wife close to him and kissed her as tears flooded his eyes.

Thank you for understanding. You’re always my anchor. Joanna placed her head on Paul’s chest, and peered through the icy frosting on the windows, which matched her icy heart.

Let’s pray about it and find out more before we jump the gun. He may be just trying to get your goat, because apparently, he’s unhappy. We can’t let him do that to us. Okay?

Okay, you’re right, as usual, I need prayers, because I’m angry that God is allowing this all to happen again. Joanna was disheartened.

Paul prayed as they clung together, Dear God, please help us in this situation. We don’t know what’s going on but give us the ability and strength to handle it. We thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Joanna felt slightly better, but still held her heart back in fear of what could be in her future. She was happy she had Paul and loved it when he took command. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she calmed down, I certainly don’t want Carrie to find out about her dad. We’re her parents as far as she knows and later when she's able to understand, I’ll tell her that we adopted her, but not now. She deserves better and she has it with us. If he got her, he would treat her like a slave and possibly even abuse her. Couldn’t deal with that!

You’re right. Couldn’t either. We’ll work on doing what we can. I believe that God will help us get through this. He's helped us before. Paul pulled Joanna to him and kissed her.

Suddenly eleven-year-old Carrie Marie’s dark brown eyes peered into a crack in their door as she crept into the room, followed by ten-year old daughter, Angie and six-year-old pipsqueak, Andy all saying, Mom and dad, get up we’re hungry.

Joanna turned her head as she wiped her teary eyes, while Paul reached out and pulled their perky children to them, hugged them, and said, No more rest. It’s time to get up and get the children off to school.

Joanna turned toward her children and forcing a smile, got out of bed and grabbed her robe. Look at you, guys! You’re amazing. It looks like you’re all ready and anxious for school. See Andy even has the same color socks on.

I’m six. Know how to dress myself. Andy puffed his chest out with a proud smile.

Oh, no you don’t. Had to pick out the right socks for you and besides you had your shoes on the wrong feet. Angie punched Andy’s arm.

Okay, okay our hungry munchkins need to be fed. Leading her brood, out to the kitchen, Joanna made them a quick breakfast of oatmeal, juice, and toast, which was tucked away rather rapidly.

Paul showered and dressed in a dark blue suit and joined his family. How would you like your old dad to drive you to school on my way to the office?

Would you? Hate the school bus. Angie piped up.

Okay. When you finish brushing your teeth and get the extra food off your faces, dad will take you. Joanna gave Paul a ‘thank you’ look, as she gave him breakfast and cup of coffee.

Leaving a messy bathroom, the children grabbed their coats caps and mittens and as Joanna stood by the door. She kissed each on the cheek, handed them a lunch bag, and shooed them out into the cool wintry morning.

Paul gave Joanna a hug, kiss, and whispered in her ear. Now don’t worry about Greg. We won’t let him get Carrie. She's ours and will always be ours. She doesn’t know any other parents. Going to talk with my partner, Harry and see what we can do about this.

Joanna kissed Paul back as a thank you. The children ran through the fluffy snow throwing snow at each other and when their dad came out, they jumped into his car. Joanna waved at them all and reached down and grabbed the morning paper from the step and quickly shut the door to the cold blast of air.

After they left, Joanna sighed, poured herself a cup of coffee and sat at the table and through her once again tears, tried to get her eyes to focus on the morning paper.

She opened the paper and suddenly stared at the headline and took a double take as she read, Greg Jenkins, ex-senator is to be wed to Cecilia Johansson, April 1st at the courthouse in Edina Minnesota.

Joanna said aloud, Cecilia- Cecilia, I know that name. She hit her brow. Yes, she’s the woman, Paul had as a client, before they were married. He told me he had dated her a few times until her husband who he didn’t know about, almost killed him. He got out of that relationship fast, but she's never stopped pestering him. Wow, she sounds like trouble. Greg must be her fourth or fifth husband. She goes through husbands as we go through our doors. She and my Ex certainly make a good pair. They'll either make each other miserable or kill each other. Right now, I’d rather it’d be the latter, she said wickedly. She threw the paper down and walked into the bedroom to dress and then started cleaning the bathroom.

    Chapter 2 Protect the children

It was a little after ten when Paul called. Talked with the police, and they had released Greg about a week ago, apparently on good behavior; can’t believe that! When I explained about the threatening phone call, they said there’s nothing they can do about him calling us, unless he hurts someone. ‘He has his rights’, they said.

Hate that! If Carrie or any of us get hurt, can they do something about that? Well, I think that would be a little late, don’t you think? What’re we going to tell the children? I don’t want them to get hurt. I certainly hope he doesn’t find out that I’m his ex-wife. This is so frustrating. Joanna started to sob again.

Don’t worry. Remember we have God on our side. Maybe we’re jumping to conclusions. He may be just feeling you out. He doesn’t know for sure you’re his ex-wife. How would he know? Remember, he thinks that you’re dead; I think he’s going to have more problems with Cecilia; she’s a real troublemaker. Apparently, she helped him get out of jail. Greg is just going to be her pawn, until someone better comes around.

You’re right, they deserve each other. Did you see the morning paper? It says that they’re planning to be married on April Fool's Day. One good thing it’ll keep them both busy for a while. Do you think she was the one who told Greg about Carrie’s baby?

I’m not sure. Dick said he’d seen her at Carrie’s funeral years ago. Harry is taking this case and if they try to do something to get our Carrie, we’ll be ready for war if we must.

If they know our telephone number they may know where we live. I sure hope that Greg or one of his cronies is not watching our house. I don’t want that jerk to find out where the children are going to school. I feel so inadequate when I can’t protect them from him.

"Don’t worry your pretty head about this. Let the lawyers take care of it. Love you. See you around three. Told the
