Thank you for taking a look at my profile page. Welcome! My magic e-books are dedicated to my teacher Slydini. It is my sincere hope that some Magicians will take up a serious study of his Art and pass it on to another generation of Magicians. My e-book: The Glass through the Table is a free download, my way to introduce you to the Magic of my teacher, Slydini. . Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated with Magic, those old time private eye movies, especially the Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart, playing cards, and all things Italian. One night, while walking through the San Francisco Financial District, the idea for my own detective stories came to me. I’ve written two e-books that will teach you how to play some great Italian Cards games. My e-book: Scopa is a free download, my way to introduce you to my detective and the Italian Card Game Scopa.

    Introduction

As I write these words, in July of 2006, cigarette smoking is under constant attack.

It is all but impossible to light a cigarette in a restaurant and many people will object to your lighting a cigarette in their home or in their presence.

I am not advocating cigarette smoking but I am advocating magic with cigarettes.

With the exception of his Torn & Restored Lit Cigarette Routine, all of Slydini’s Cigarette Magic involves unlit cigarettes.

A typical reaction to my pack of cigarettes is a raised eyebrow and a ‘you’re not going to smoke that here are you’?

I’ve learned to anticipate the objection by saying: Don’t worry I’m not going to light it.

If my client says something like; That’s OK...

I’ll include the Torn & Restored Lit Cigarette Routine in my program if it is appropriate.

    Slydini’s cigarette routines include:

The Torn & Restored Lit Cigarette,

Two versions of The Torn & Restored Unlit Cigarette (in one version the cigarette is broken into three parts and in the second the cigarette paper is split the entire length of the cigarette and the tobacco is dumped onto the hand of the spectator (and then restored),

    Two Cigarettes from One

and his Cigarette Fantasy, a production of unlit cigarettes.

Years ago; when I was just beginning my studies; Slydini created a Signed Card to Cigarette for Doug Henning; also, a Slydini student at the time. Doug performed the routine on a television special.

The routines call upon the student to be able to employ Slydini’s Timing Sequences.

The student must know how to perform the Revolve Vanish, The Imp Pass, and the Slydini Cigarette Palm.

For a complete study of these principles, see my book: The Master of Misdirection.

The Cigarette Fantasy is the ultimate conclusion of the Slydini system of movement.

With the exception of my fellow Slydini student J.P. Laramee; I have never seen anyone except Slydini perform it.

It is my sincere hope that a few magicians will commit to learning and perfecting this routine (as well as Slydini’s other Cigarette Magic) and so keep it alive for a new generation of magicians.

    The Torn & Restored Cigarette

This is the first trick I ever saw my teacher perform for a group of magicians. I was a new student attending my first Tannen’s Magic Convention. I didn’t know anyone. I just wandered around hoping no one would ask me to show them a trick.

I went to the Show, took a seat and waited by myself. Slydini came into the room dressed in a dark suit. He smiled and sat behind the table. He adjusted his chair and rubbed his hands together. He looked like a conductor stepping up to the podium. The room became quiet in anticipation.

Slydini smiled and clapped his hands together; in an instant the room was quiet. A man was brought up and took a seat across from him. Slydini thanked him for coming up, then took out a pack of Lucky Strikes and shook out a cigarette.

A cigarette, take a look, see if there’s any magic inside and then; Look inside, you’ll see my picture.

There was a little laughter but mostly the room stayed quiet, everyone was waiting. Slydini worked slowly, step by step, he was in no hurry. He asked the man to hold out his palm, Slydini showed him how he wanted him to do it.

Please, hold out your hand; this way… yes…fine.

Slydini picked up the cigarette and held it in his left hand, fingers wide apart. As he spoke he gestured with his right hand which also was seen to be completely empty.

Now; I am going to tear the cigarette, I really tear it, you won’t believe it; watch. He ripped about a ¼ of the cigarette paper at the very tip of the cigarette and then paused.

    You see?

Once he got his confirmation that the cigarette paper was torn; In fact I’ll tear the paper all the way and all the tobacco comes out.

The paper was split completely down the center; dropping the tobacco onto the assistant’s hand.

Slydini showed the cigarette paper once more. An empty piece of paper; right? I put ‘em here. The paper was placed to the side; he sort of smacked it as he put it down on the table.

Now put all the tobacco inside my hand. He held out his left hand and pointed with his right forefinger. The assistant followed the instructions without knowing what was about to happen. Slydini used the middle finger of his right hand to gently create a neat pile of tobacco in his left hand. He kind of mumbled to himself. ‘Yes, fine… that’s it". He brought the left hand to the edge of the table and seemed to forget about it as he turned his attention to the cigarette paper.

He picked up the cigarette paper with his right hand and gave it to his assistant.

Now…I want you to take the cigarette paper, roll it into a little ball and place in on the center… take your time.

As he said ‘on the center’ he pointed to the pile of tobacco in his left hand. He leaned back in his chair. He seemed to be waiting for the cigarette paper, and then almost as an afterthought, said Take your time.

The assistant rolled the paper into a ball and then kind of looked at Slydini for instruction. Slydini extended his left hand and looked at the pile of tobacco. As the man dropped the paper on the pile Slydini said Yes, that’s it.

He leaned back and turned his left hand over; as he did he said: Did you ever see anything so beautiful?

The cigarette, completely restored in an instant, was lying there on the table. The room, quiet just a second ago, filled up with ‘oohs and ‘ahs’. Slydini smiled and picked up the cigarette admiring his work.
