About this ebook
Don Alan Tribute:
This manuscript represents my investigation into applying Slydini's principles to these great Don Alan presentations: The Chop Cup, The Benson Bowl, and Big Deal.
My Chop Cup routine uses Slydini's system of movement, his Revolve Vanish, and his Timing Patterns. The timing patterns are what accomplish the two final loads of the Chop Cup. In the Benson Bowl, I wanted to load the bowl differently, vanish the sponge balls in a Slydini manner, and show my hands to be empty whenever possible. In his act Don Alan changed (what appeared to be) a mini deck of playing cards in to a regular deck of cards.I wanted the spectator to shuffle an actual mini deck prior to its transformation into a regular deck. I created a deck switch which works very well. Once the deck has 'grown' into a regular size deck, I go into the Bag Stabbed Routine.

Thank you for taking a look at my profile page. Welcome! My magic e-books are dedicated to my teacher Slydini. It is my sincere hope that some Magicians will take up a serious study of his Art and pass it on to another generation of Magicians. My e-book: The Glass through the Table is a free download, my way to introduce you to the Magic of my teacher, Slydini. . Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated with Magic, those old time private eye movies, especially the Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart, playing cards, and all things Italian. One night, while walking through the San Francisco Financial District, the idea for my own detective stories came to me. I’ve written two e-books that will teach you how to play some great Italian Cards games. My e-book: Scopa is a free download, my way to introduce you to my detective and the Italian Card Game Scopa.

Introduction
I am a big Don Alan fan. The first time I saw him was on television. It was just by luck. He was on the Mike Douglas TV show. That day he did magic for Mike Douglas, Henny Youngman, and Phyllis Diller. He had then rolling with laughter and amazement.
I have Don Alan’s: Pretty Sneaky book. I own: In A Class by Himself, The Legacy of Don Alan, by Jon Racherbaumer.
I bought his performance DVD from Stevens Magic Emporium, watched clips of his Magic Ranch show, other TV appearances of his on YouTube.
He used all kinds of comedy props and gags. He did the Chop Cup, the Benson Bowl and a great hat load.
He did Ring Flight, the Cigarette through the Quarter, a rising card effect. Over the years he put his personal stamp on many of the classic close of magic tricks of his era.
He was one of the most copied magicians of his day. There were some that coped his entire act, word for word, and then presented it as their own, which he deeply resented.
I am also a big Tommy Wonder fan. Tommy slightly modified Don Alan’s Magic Ranch card trick by including a magical appearance of the wooden egg.
This, I feel, is something Don Alan would have approved of because Tommy Wonder did not copy Dan Alan, he was inspired by Don Alan.
Don Alan was a seated Cloe Up Magician, as am I.
I began to think about how I could use the techniques Slydini taught me in the reconstruction of a Don Alan Routine.
That lead me to my versions of the Chop Cup, the Benson Bowl, Bagged Stabbed, and a new version of Micro Macro, the change of a mini deck of playing cards into a regular size deck.
I changed the presentations to suit me and the mechanics are use are very different from
Don Alan’s but that aside, he was my inspiration of these investigations.
I hope he would have approved. I think so.

Bag Stabbed
Don Alan’s ‘Bag Stabbed’ is the most entertaining card stab I know of.
A card is feely selected, signed, and then returned to the deck. The deck is shuffled and placed in a plain brown bag.
A very threatening knife is introduced and after some very amusing by-play the selected card is stabbed right through the bag.
When I first started doing this trick I also had a freely selected and signed. I controlled it to the top and then in a way I will share with you stuck that card to the inner side of the bag, so I could stab in when the time came.
When I first started doing the trick I did it as a seated presentation. I’ve included that information here.
Ultimately I made this a platform trick. I discarded the sign card. I became much more interested in creating a situation that would be funny and entertaining.
For my stand up version I have a brown paper bag in my folded in by pocket. You can get these bags at the grocery store, the size use for a sandwich or a child’s school lunch.
I use a one way forcing deck. I just took one of the cards from the deck and stuck it to the inside of the bag with magicians wax. The assistant has a free choice because all the remaining 51 cards are the same. After the card is displayed to the audience I just toss the entire deck into the bag!
