தமிழ்மொழியின் ஒப்புயற்வற்ற நூல் திருக்குறள். மனித இனம் முழுமைக்கும் பயன்தரும் வண்ணம் திருவள்ளுவர் இதைப் படைத்துள்ளார்.

வாழ்க்கைக்கு இன்றியமையாதனவாக நான் கருதும் குறட்பாக்களை (ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்புடன்) இந்நூலில் தொகுத்து அளித்துள்ளேன்.

PREFACE

‘Thirukkural’ is the eminent book of Tamil Language. Thiruvalluvar has created it as useful to the whole human race.

According to my view, I have compiled couplets (with English translation) in this book which are very essential for life.

1. அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி

பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.

எழுத்துக்களுக்கு ‘அ’கரம் முதலாவதாக இருப்பது போல, இப்பூமிக்கு (அடிப்படையாக) பழமை வாய்ந்த கடவுள் (அல்லது) சூரியன் இருக்கிறது.

'A' leads letter, the Ancient Lord

Leads and lords the entire world.

As the letter ‘A’ is the first of all letters, so the eternal God (or Sun) is first in the World.

2. முறை செய்து காப்பாற்றும் மன்னவன் மக்கட்கு

இறையென்று வைக்கப் படும்

நீதிமுறை செய்து குடிமக்களைக் காப்பாற்றும் மன்னன் மக்களால் கடவுளாகக் கருதி மதிக்கப்படுவான்.

He is the Lord of people who does

Sound Justice and saves them.

The king will he esteemed as a God among people, who performs his own duties with justice and protects the country.

3. வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலான் அடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு

யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.

விருப்பு, வெறுப்பு இல்லாமல் நடு பிலையோடு இருப்பவனின் கீழ்க் கூடி வாழ்பவர்க்கு எப்போதும் துன்பமில்லை.

Who hold the feet who likes nor loathes

Are free from woes of human births.

To those who are united to the feet of him who is without desire or aversion evil shall never come.

4. காட்சிக்கு எளியன் கடுஞ்சொல்லன் அல்லனேல்

மீக்கூறும் மன்னன் பிலம்

காண்பதற்கு எளியவனாய், கடுஞ்சொல் கூறாதவனாய் இருந்தால், அந்த மன்னனுடைய ஆட்சிக்கு உட்பட்ட நாட்டை உலகம் புகழும்.

That land prospers where the king is

Easy to see, not harsh of words.

The whole world will exalt the country of the king who is easy of access and whose words are without harshess.

5. இயல்புளிக் கோலோச்சும் மன்னவன் நாட்ட

பெயலும் விளையுளும் தொக்கு.

நீதி முறைப்படி ஆட்சி
