    Chapter One: Another Round, Please

What the fuck are you doing? I laugh as I watch Lizzie try to draw a picture on the large tablet.

She looks at me and shakes her head. You have to know what it is, Asa! My wife has had one too many strawberry daquiris already, and I am beginning to believe that I might have as well.

It looks like an ink-drawn pile of shit, I say as I chuckle and look over at our friends. Come on, you two know that she doesn’t know what she is drawing.

Payton and Danielle Enos have been friends of ours since we moved in next door to them more than two years ago. They are about our same age, in their early thirties, and very involved in the grocery store they own in one of the better neighborhoods in the city. Easy, Asa, Danielle tells me with a smile. You have to go home with her tonight.

I smile widely as I reply, I’m not sure the two of us will be able to get home tonight if we have to rely on her driving.

Dammit, Asa, time is running out. Lizzie looks worriedly at the small sand-filled glass that is ticking down the three minutes limit she has been given to draw the picture and then for me to guess what it is. Come on.

Turning my head to the side, I frown as I squint my eyes toward the large paper with dark marker ink. I’m sorry, honey, but that looks like a map for Borneo or something similar.

Fuck! The sand in the timer finally runs out and my wife is livid as she focuses her brown eyes on me. You are always such a goofball when you need to be serious, Asa. She sits down on the sofa beside me and folds her arms.

Well? Payton asks. What is it?

My wife’s eyes turn toward the other man in the room, her glare cold as she looks at him. It’s a dinosaur! she declares as she turns her attention back to the sketch. See the head and where the mouth and teeth are? The tail is right on the back of it. Lizzie points a finger to the left side of the drawing. Anyone can see that it’s a dinosaur.

Um, I’m not so sure about that, I say as I laugh again.

You are going to end up in the doghouse, Asa. Danielle laughs as well as she covers her mouth. We have all had too much to drink, and it is bringing out some personalities in us that are not as commonly seen when we are sober. Unfortunately, that means that my wife gets angry easily if she feels mocked or embarrassed."

Look, I say as I reach over and put my hand on Lizzie’s arm. I can see it now that you have pointed everything out. It’s just that I have had too much to drink at this point and my mind isn’t really putting things together like they should be put together. Smiling, I add, The important thing is that we are still ahead of Payton and Danielle.

Ahead? How do you figure that? Payton picks up the score pad and shows me his calculations. We are dead even, my friend. I think we need some sort of tie-breaker before we call it quits, or at least another round.

Oh, not another round, his wife tells him as she shakes her head. How about this time we just accept this as a win by each side, okay? We both win. She smiles as she looks at her husband. Danielle is very good at convincing Payton of going along with something even though he might be inclined to go another direction.

Sighing, Payton agrees to the premise. Fine; it’s not a tie, though. It’s a win for each of us, right?

Right. I smile and nod my approval as I squeeze my wife’s hand. Honey, I love you.

At first, Lizzie won’t look at me, but eventually she turns and says to me, I think I’m a little too buzzed to draw. It really does look like Borneo, doesn’t it?

I laugh again. A little. We lean toward each other and share a kiss before I get up and take my glass to the bar separating the kitchen from the living room.

So, what are we doing next weekend? Danielle asks excitedly as she looks around the living room at us. We still need to go on that hike in the mountains and take some pictures of all the fall colors.

I can’t next weekend, I reply as I turn around to face her. I have a meeting to go to in Scranton. Otherwise, I would love to go. Nodding toward my wife, I add, Lizzie could go, though.

She shakes her head. No, I think I might be working on a large order of flowers that weekend. There is a wedding the week after next and everything has to be just right or the bridezilla will come after me. My wife finally smiles as she adds, I hate dealing with hormonal brides.

Hormonal? I sit back down on the sofa beside my wife. What do you mean by that?

Well, this bride is five months pregnant with her baby and her hormones are out of whack. Every time she comes in to talk about the flower arrangements, she is either crying or so giddy and talkative that I can’t get a word in edgewise. It’s been a frustrating experience to say the least.

Payton nods his understanding. We get that sort in our grocery store from time to time and they can be a bit trying. However, the older men who are going through andropause can be challenging as well.

Andropause? I chuckle. What the hell is that?

Well, some of the middle-aged guys who come in call it manopause. Apparently, their testosterone levels drop off and some of them become really gripey. The only reason I know this is because of the pharmacy in our store and the fact that we sit right next door to a retirement neighborhood.

Wow, I hope I don’t get that, I say as I look over at my wife. I don’t want to have to smear testosterone cream all over me to get myself back into synch with my hormones.

Me neither. Payton and I laugh, but the women just quietly sit and watch.

You know, hormone imbalance is a real problem, guys. Even though Lizzie just commented on the hormonal challenges of a current customer, she chides us for talking about other examples.

Sure, it is, I reply. But it’s the way some of these people behave…

They sometimes can’t help it. Danielle presses her lips together as she looks from me to her husband. You two are a little insensitive sometimes.

Geesh, sweetheart, her husband says as his face turns red. We were just trying to have a conversation, that’s all.

My wife is the first to crack a grin, but then Danielle laughs out. The two women hold their stomachs as they laugh hard. Shit, I thought you were serious, I tell the two of them as I lean back into my seat. You scared us.

Yeah, you did, Payton agrees. He isn’t as quick to smile with relief, but he does take a deep breath and relax a little. Not very nice, my love.

Why not? Danielle asks. You two guys would have done something like that to us if you had the chance. Remember the trip to New York last month? Both of you were trying to convince us that the city was tearing down the Empire State Building. You even said that we would be among the last to see it from on top before it came down.

Payton begins to laugh. The way you asked the first-floor security guys when the building was scheduled to come down was hilarious!

It wasn’t funny, Payton! Danielle shakes her head. He thought I was nuts or even worse a potential terrorist. You nearly got me arrested!

Hey, I didn’t tell you to ask the security guard anything, Danielle. You did that all on your own. We laugh together and even Lizzie seems to give a snicker or two.

Well, one of these days you will get yours, dear husband. Danielle stands up and walks
