In reading this book I recognize the openness to the
challenge by God to share our gifts with others. I was
particularly touched by the gift of forgiveness, and the

    About the Author

Judy (Mc Enderry) Figland was born in Sydenham, Durban—South Africa; the eldest of a family of ten children. After matric at Wentworth High school, she studied teaching at Bechet College and continued her studies, while married, and having three children. She graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in English and History, and Post graduate Higher Diploma in Education through the University of South Africa (UNISA). She further continued her studies, and obtained a Masters Degree in Education through the Australiant Catholic University.

While she studied education, she worked two years for the Department of Education at Fairvale High school and then, was offered a bursary to study youthwork by the late Archbishop Hurley, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Durban. She completed the Youthwork training and began to use her education background in youthwork programmes and later, training youthworkers for Dioceses within the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference territory. She worked for about ten years for the Youth Commission of the Bishops conference and in 1990 was asked to initiate a Family Life ministry programme in the Mariannhill Diocese.

The Home and Family Life Programme in the Diocese was a great success, and this led to the establishment of a Non-governmental organization called Home and Family Life Foundation. Judy Figland was the director of Home and Family Life Foundation from its inception in 1994 to 2004. During this period she was involved in Training programmes around Child Abuse, Youth Leadership and AIDS education, Womens Empowerment programmes, Marriage and Family counseling programmes. One initiative she was involved in, was the launching of the Retrouvaille Programme in the Diocese of Mariannhill. This programme is aimed at working with Married couples who are struggling with their marriages and wish to find joy and fulfillment again. The couples are taught new ways of dealing with issues and creating a positive environment in the family. It requires a commitment from the couple to truly work on their marriage.

She gained invaluable experience in working with people and attempting to find solutions or ways of coping, with all the issues that families have to cope with in this modern age.

During the last four years, through her business, MacDunn Training Consultants, Judy Figland has been involved in facilitating the training workshops for the Youth Commission of the Archdiocese of Durban. This has brought her in contact with the challenges faced by young people to-day. The questions of young people regarding "Who am I? Where Am I going? How do I find meaning or significance in my life? How do I cope with my dysfunctional family? How do I bounce back after a serious disaster in my life?
