PREFACE
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder caused by deficiency or diminished effectiveness of insulin in the body. It is associated with acute and long term problems involving the eyes, kidneys, nerves, blood vessels and other organs in the body. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is important for regulating the amount of glucose in the blood. Glucose is a crucial source of fuel in the body and insulin facilitates the movement of glucose into cells. The red blood cells, healing wounds, brain and other organs in the body require glucose for fuel. Depending on the severity, diabetes mellitus is controlled with diet and exercise to lose weight, insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents. Diabetes has some effects on the unborn baby during pregnancy therefore a pregnant woman who is diabetic is managed closely. Diabetes is a challenge during surgery as it requires close monitoring to ensure the blood glucose is within normal limits.
This book is to guide diabetics and help them to manage the disease effectively, control blood sugar, and prevent complications. This book should not be used as a substitute for diabetic therapy, self-diagnosis and medication. Diabetics should regularly visit their doctor and keep to advice and instructions.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I wish to express my profound gratitude to all those who have contributed to making this work a success. I acknowledge all the agencies that provide free medical health care to rural Nigeria, through which I saw many undiagnosed diabetics. Some even have complications and they do not have access to health care because of poverty. Many diabetics do not have access to information on the disease. Some of these people have health care facilities around them but
