Coming Winter - Dolores Hardin Richardson
AUTUMN WHEN COLORS MERGE
The days of Spring and Summer appear just beyond my reach
And I could moan my loss, if it were loss indeed,
But it is not. Those yellow honey days of Spring
I yet stir with my spoon, and I still bless the wings
Of bees involved in miracles.
The passion days of Summer still simmer red and warm
And I still hold their embers in my bowl. No storm
Can yet rage hard enough to extinguish their steady glow.
It is not they, but I who am the center pole
Around which all things turn.
Spring and Summer. Yellow and red. Both blend to form
Autumn, the most perfect unchangeable color Orange.
When passed through a prism, Orange does not separate
Into yellow and red. Orange remains Orange. It is I who
Will make tomorrow white or blue-warm.
