You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.
INTRODUCTION
Gratiarophobia refers to the absolute fear some of us have for the Thanksgiving and other holiday periods. This is as a result of us not wanting to see family members due to heightened expectations of what we ought to have achieved throughout the year or simply not just not wanting to be in the midst of so many people asking questions they have no business with. It is also a time of the year when old rivalry and wounds are opened. We simply come together to fulfill
these bonding requirements every November to give thanks notwithstanding the sacrifices we have to make. It is a time for giving thanks for seeing the year through. Food. That is another significant obstacle quite a few of us have to overcome. The turkey, stuffing and the dinner table is not just another battle, but a series of hit and runs we have to partake in to win the war. Sufferers of Thanksgiving tend to give the buffet spread a wide berth and will preferably be alone. This occasion is meant to be embraced and enjoyed. The high-stress levels and anxiety you may likely experience during this time of the year is more often than not associated with the high expectations placed on you to enjoy the company which is likely unwanted and the food. If you are a binge eater, your senses will be overwhelmed and reigning yourself in will be quite hard. Having eating as the centerpiece of the holiday, excessive gorging is often overlooked, and it can weigh heavy on you. Looking at it from all points of view, eating disorders are not entirely about food. Other factors are strongly influential so being around loved ones can be quite problematic during this period leading to a massive uptake or total cut off from the menu. So whenever a festive period comes along or a family gathering, here are some simple and easy to follow guides I have put together on getting through it scat free. It will take some of your time getting your act together for the holidays, but it will be well worth it.
CHAPTER ONE
WHAT ARE EATING DISORDERS?
You may be struggling with it or have a close relative or friend who is in the battle too, and you know all about what you are facing every day. However, if you need to broaden your field on the subject or you need a little bit of information to add to the plethora of guides and medical advice, then let us get started. So what are eating disorders?
Eating disorders are severe disruptions of the eating behaviors and associated emotional wellbeing of victims. There is undue attention placed on the body image and diet. A few million people are currently battling this disorder with women having a higher percentage. Eating disorders swing to opposite poles of our eating habits; which can be a severe reduction in the inflow of nutrients into the body or eating far more than is required at any given time. Body image concerns which are abnormal can also be termed eating disorders which are also linked to the emotional psyche of the individual. It usually begins without having any significant effects on the body till it becomes quite pronounced. It is a terrible subject to study as it involves several factors with links that have not been fully understood.
Signs and Symptoms
Eating disorders involve a complex and varied array of signs with some being more dominant. Disappearing for long periods immediately after eating, downright aversion to food and noticeable weight loss or gain can be the easily noticeable signs of an eating disorder. Some behavioral patterns include restrictive food intake, exercising when it is apparently not needed or convenient and exhibiting some form of Obsessive Compulsion Disorder. Specific food groups are also avoided entirely which previously brought joy to the eater and then subsisting on fluids, e.g., coffee, tea, water, and gum. Meals are also preferably eaten alone away from prying eyes. There is a tendency to shy away from questions about your eating habits in a social gathering because of the strictly regulated food intake which may be quite restrictive or entirely over the board which may disgust your friends and family. Magazines, cook shows, and diet books become an obsession with you. Constant checking of weight and observing body changes in front of the mirror is quite frequent. In addition to body loss or gain of fat and weight, ladies most often tend to have changes in their menstrual cycle which must be for three months straight for an eating disorder to be associated with the weight loss. There is also a tendency for a person to be abnormally sensitive to temperature changes around the environment. Bad breath, an increase or reduction in the number of hairs on the body and a compulsion to wearing baggy clothes can also be observed.
There is an increased sensitivity to words of advice about body image leading to one avoiding social contacts. A feeling of self-worthlessness which brings about depression and shame comes up real fast. There is also an idea of how the body looks which is far from reality. Thinking that losing a considerable amount or gaining of weight will make you look better or seeking solace in the arms of food or running far away from it.
Indicators
It is imperative that you don't have any guilty feeling about your condition. You simply have no choice in coming down with the disorder, but you have an opportunity in facing it head on and not letting it get the best of you. The condition is a cornucopia of a lot of factors both inherent and external which could also be triggered by a thousand and one sensors all around us. Since it is entirely out of your hands on how it came to be your cross, you have to move on and spend less valuable time dwelling on what ifs. It's a complicated scenario involving cultural, stress, body image, hereditary and several other unknowns coming together to result in the condition.
We are now going to quickly touch on the major eating disorders and how to identify them in yourself or loved ones around.
Bulimia Nervosa
This is associated with eating a significant amount of foods over a short period usually in secret and then getting rid of it shortly after by several ways, e.g., throwing up, use of laxatives or fasting. It is a sort of binge eating disorder whereas in binge eating, the food is not expelled from the body and it occurs at least twice a week for three months or more and leads to excessive weight gains. Bulimia victims are quite similar to anorexic victims in that they are terrified of
