Something weird. The two girls go to their friends Jennifer and Sarah's house. They plan and do
something and then join the Police Department. The girls are too young to work but they do it
anyway. As a case is going on, Jennifer meets a boy named Adam. Later on, the five children
find out they have a stronger bond than just being friends. From there, things start to change
making their normal life turn totally upside down and unsafe. They find out who they are and
what they have to do. Especially the Chosen Ones. The Chosen Ones have a bigger job. They
have to fight to protect two worlds - The Wizardry and The Mortals.

The Chosen Ones is the first book written by V. A. Cortez. She is currently working on her second book. She started writing two years ago at the age of 12 and stopped for several months. She then continued working on her project and finished a year later. She is currently in the eighth grade and is in the Honor Roll. She is also involved in the Student Council. One of her goals in life as she reaches adulthood is to continue writing. When she reaches her college years in the future, she will take classes to strengthen her writing skills. She also has thoughts about joining the Service as an adult. V. A. Cortez lives with her mother in a west suburb of Chicago, Illinois. In addition to writing, V. A. Cortez enjoys reading, sketching, cross-stitching, puzzles and watching movies. Her favorite sports are basketball and soccer.

CHAPTER 1

There was a nine year old girl named Asia that lived in a city. Her sister Michelle was eleven years old. They were having a good life until something bad happened and it concerned them and others.

One day it was raining and the girls were really bored. Asia’s sister wanted to go outside and get wet but her parents wouldn’t let her go. Then she said things that she would regret. You guys are so mean and rude. Also you guys look terrible these days. After that she ran out the door with her younger sister after her. Then Asia stopped and yelled back Come and get us before you lose us!

The parents just yelled instead of going after them thinking that they’ll listen and come back but they didn’t. The parents finally went after them and looked but they couldn’t find them. They went back inside and called most of their friends asking them if they saw Asia and Michelle but everyone said no. The parents felt bad afterwards.

A little while later Asia and Michelle got to their friend’s house. They didn’t tell their parents that they had a friend named Sarah because they knew that one day they would run away and would need a place to stay. That day had come. When Asia and Michelle got to Sarah’s house they were soaked from the rain. Sarah let Michelle change into her clothes. Since Sarah has a younger sister Asia’s age, she let Asia wear her sister’s clothes. Sarah called her sister Jennifer over to say hi and hand over some clothes. When Jennifer saw them, she got very excited. After awhile they felt safe at Sarah’s house. Then Michelle suggested We need to find a way to see what is going on with our parents.

Asia noticed that something was happening with her. She said We need to go now before we get caught. They are going to every house. Michelle asked How do you know that? Sarah interrupted saying Let’s go.

They ran out the door and Asia and Michelle’s father almost saw them. The mother couldn’t see anything because it was raining so hard that you couldn’t get a clear picture, so the father just let it go. A few minutes later, the parents reached Sarah’s house. They rung the doorbell but nobody answered so they went on. About thirty minutes later, the four girls were in the forest where Sarah had a hiding place. She had this hiding place just in case there was any danger of any kind then they wouldn’t be able to find her. Nobody knew about it. Asia said that she has a nice place. Her sister agreed too.

The next morning they all woke up early. The four girls ate cherries. The cherries that they ate tasted good and they got full. Michelle asked again how Asia knew that their parents were close back at Sarah’s house. Asia just said It’s my first time doing it so I don’t really know the answer. Right after breakfast, they started getting the materials to make their own wooden cars. They worked on them for weeks. While they were in the forest they ate cherries, apples, pears, and other things. Finally they were done making their own cars and took a break that lasted a week. Then all four of them were going for a drive to Asia’s house and they had a lot of fun. When they got to Asia and Michelle’s house, they went to the window to see what was happening. The parents were arguing with each other. A police car was coming up to the house so two of them went to the police and two stayed behind to watch what Asia’s parents were doing.

The girls that went to the police car were Michelle and Jennifer. The other two that stayed behind were Sarah and Asia. Michelle and Jennifer got to the police car and told the officer that her and her sister’s parents were very mean to them and would hit them. They ran away and were at their friend’s house so they were safe. The police bought the trick that the girls made up. The other two arrived at the patrol car and Sarah told the officer that Asia knew what was going on. Asia said that the parents were drinking a lot of water and every time they drank they got meaner. The officer in the police car called other officers to help arrest and the chemists (from the department) that are good at looking for dangerous chemicals of any kind. After he was done calling he said that there was a person out there that was probably putting poison in the water. The reason they were getting mean was because the poison was hurting the body, and the body couldn’t get rid of it.

All of a sudden, other police officers arrived and they went to the door to arrest the parents. The parents wanted to know why they were going to jail. The girls showed themselves. The parents were ready to hit them but luckily the police had them handcuffed. They arrived at the jail and a couple of the officers stayed behind to look through the house and the chemists checked the water. They did find poison in the water. The police took the children and the cars that they made. When they got to the police station they took Asia to the laboratory so they could study her. The other three stayed in the waiting room. When they were done with Asia they took her and the others to the Boss. He said that they could join the police force if they wanted to. At first their eyes just opened up and they asked Aren’t we too young? The Boss just shook his head. When the girls were out of shock, they all yelled Yes! Right after that, they got into their uniforms and got everything ready. They were happy because they got to join the police department even though they were young.

Finally they all got their classes. They went to shooting class and fighting class. The police officers said that they have to be careful with shooting class. Asia and Jennifer went to fighting class and a little bit of shooting. Sarah and Michelle went to shooting class and a little bit of fighting. The rest of the classes the girls had together. It took four months for the girls to be ready. On the fifth month, the kids rode with the police officers when there were emergencies.

One day the police needed to take care of a bank robbery. After a while, they needed help. Asia suggested that they should help but the others backed down. Dang guys! Are you too afraid to help the police? You guys are useless. Then Jennifer stood up and said to Sarah and Michelle Maybe if we help we could get rewarded with something like money. Then they went out there. Jennifer thought that was a good trick. They won’t give us money though.

They snuck out and went in front with the other officers behind the police cars and started shooting. They would shoot 20 robbers within five minutes. It took some time because the robbers were shooting nonstop and they would shoot at certain times. When there were fewer people, Asia and Jennifer went out there and started using their fighting techniques.

Somebody comes up behind Jennifer and shoots her. When Asia heard the shot and scream, she ran toward the guy. The guy then shot Asia and ran off. She fell on the floor and bled along with Jennifer. The police called for an ambulance. While they were helping the two girls, the gang got out from the back. The rest of the police officers that weren’t helping were arresting the robbers that got shot and couldn’t go anywhere. When Jennifer and Asia woke up, they found the Boss by their bed. When he saw that they were awake, he stood up and said You guys did a good job out there and we congratulate you.

Thank you said Jennifer and Asia. They rested while the nurses came in and took them away to take tests. After a few days, they left the hospital. When they got back to the police department they were surprised because they had a surprise party. The party cake said Thanks for your help. There was a lot of food as well. The girls had a fun time but the only thing that bothered Asia and Jennifer was their crutches. The party started at noon and ended at 9:00 p.m. When everybody left, all four girls went straight to bed. They all fell asleep within minutes. During the night, Sarah heard something as if somebody had broken into the building. Sarah got out of her bed to check who was there. Somebody was there, so she went to wake up Michelle for help but she wouldn’t wake up. Sarah didn’t have a button in her room so that the sirens could go off so she made a plan.

Sarah said Hey! What are you doing here? Then the stranger shot his gun. Now she was able to shoot (while she was talking, she was behind the door so that the stranger would shoot which he did). Then all of a sudden, Michelle woke up from the sound. Sarah told her to get her gun. Michelle got her gun and screamed out, What are you doing here and waking us up for! Then she started shooting. Sarah grabbed Michelle’s sleeve and pulled her in the room at the perfect time because a bullet just passed by Michelle’s face. So you want to play like that, eh! exclaimed Michelle. Then a police officer came out and yelled What’s going on?

The police officer got shot and fell to the floor. Michelle and Sarah started shooting everywhere the bad person was. The girls stopped shooting, the bad person shot a bullet then the girls shot him. They heard a thump. They went by the stranger very slowly. How did you guys do that?

Do what? Michelle spoke softly.

Shoot me when I was shooting at you guys the stranger said in a painful voice.

Well, let’s just say that we are smarter since you Michelle started yelling came and woke us up! They heard the police come over, helped the police officer that got shot and handcuffed the bad guy. They both got their wounds taken care of.

When Asia and Jennifer woke up in the morning, they saw holes in the walls. They went to Michelle and asked what went on. Michelle just answered in a tired voice A stranger came into the building and tried to do something but he won’t tell us. Asia murmured Let me go see him. They went to the room where they had the stranger. When they got there Asia said He looks familiar. I think he was bringing some water in the house and he was alone so that- THATS IT! Asia tried to run to the Boss with her crutches.

What’s it? Michelle ran after Asia. When Asia got to the group of police and the Boss, she said that she had seen this guy before and that he was putting water in the kitchen. So he must have put the poison in the water since he was alone. The Boss said that the case would be done after they had evidence but then Asia interrupted and said that the people do not work alone. A female police officer said that Asia was right about that fact. How do you know that people don’t work alone? Asia just said that she read it in one of the books that the department has.

Well then, we will still look for the people who are doing this. suggested the Boss. Then Asia continued "We should tell everybody in the neighborhood not to drink their water if they order any." Everybody that was listening agreed to that idea. Then a male police officer came in and whispered in the Boss’s ear that the hospital received a lot of patients that were sick from some poison that was in their ordered water. Asia and Jennifer went to the hospital with the Boss. When they got there, there were a lot of ambulances in the back. They hurried up to get inside. The Boss took care of everything in the hospital. After that they went to everybody’s houses and left a note on their door saying:

Please do not drink or order any more water because they will be shut down for a little while. Thanks for your cooperation.

They also went to the water companies. They all said that they check the water to see if it is clean. They also had employees deliver water to people’s homes. All the managers of the water companies showed the police the pictures of the delivery employees. Most of the employees looked the same from the other pictures that they got. It looks like they got their target. Their targets would work at different times. One guy one day, another guy another day and so on. All they have to do is look for them with the help of Michelle and Sarah. How come we can’t come! yelled Jennifer. You are hurt, said the Boss real badly.

When Michelle and Sarah heard the news, they jumped up and down. Then they stopped jumping and felt bad about Jennifer and Asia. That was different because they always used to take them everywhere back home. They didn’t like it back then when they used to take their younger sisters everywhere they went. Maybe they were just used to it by now. Then Asia came into the room and told Michelle and Sarah to go since they couldn’t do it. Also do it for us. Then Jennifer came behind Asia and suggested that they should go undercover.

Everyone that heard that outside the door paused and stood quiet. Then somebody spoke up and said We can’t send anymore people undercover because a lot of people died the last time we made them go undercover.

Sarah didn’t listen and went straight to the manager. Michelle followed. When Sarah got done asking the manager if they could go undercover, he said no. Michelle and Sarah gave him sad looks. It didn’t work. The next step the two girls did was follow the manager around saying Please. Then the manager finally gave up and said Fine.

The day came to go undercover. They got ready but Jennifer and Asia had to stay behind at the police station. When it was time to go, a male police officer came up and told the manager Don’t go. We don’t want anything happening with these kids that you’re taking. The manager just kept on going, followed by Sarah and Michelle.

CHAPTER 2

They arrived at a place that looked like it was burned and there was no one around. They were wondering why no one was there. They were guessing that somebody put in the wrong directions, but who? Sarah said Let’s investigate the old place that was once used instead of standing here.

Are you asking to go back to the station Sarah?

No Mr. Harman, I didn’t mean what I just said.

You could call me Alex, said the manager.

Can the others call you Alex asked Michelle referring to Asia and Jennifer.

Yes they can. replied Alex.

Then they went to investigate the place. They took out their guns for protection.

Just then Michelle asked if the other two heard something. They shook their heads no. Right then somebody said No one fires their guns or else you will get hurt. Mr. Harman and the girls hid behind something. Since there was a railing, many people were standing there. One of those people came down from the railing to shut the door. There were about 50 people on the railing and they were trapped. Somebody came down the railing and asked who the two girls were. The girls said their names. Then Alex spoke up and asked Why did you leave home? to his brother.

So I don’t have to take anymore of our parents’ talk about what’s wrong and right and- Alex’s brother stopped talking because the girls were there. He instructed one of his men to take them to the truck where they couldn’t get out.

A few hours later, the police at the department heard that the three got caught. The person who found out was the person who tried to change the directions. Even though he didn’t do the plan he was going to get more money than the police gave him. He didn’t think that the person to give him money wouldn’t notice.

The Boss of the group that had the girls and Alex were ready to go to the police station to harm the person that he promised money to. Julio was the officer’s name. Alex’s brother changed his mind because he had something more
