Life Through The Eyes of Novia Newsom - Nikel Dixon

    Chapter 1

    Novia Newsom

I dreamed I called the actor Steve Herkeis in the wee hours of the morning. His wife answered the phone but I don’t know the reason I was calling but I told her to forget it; she told me she can wake him up, then I hung up the phone.

I could hear the regular debate between my mother and grandma with my sister Noveen about a man. I lay there listening and looking up to my ceiling, moving my lips to their famous words which were How you gonna get a man but always in the house. My sister Noveen is the quiet one, therefore they have these talks with her because they know when I come downstairs , I will tell my sister like I always tell her. Noveen please date when you get ready , don’t rush the process, and these two giving you advice. Hmm , One nagged her husband’s head off and he left her and the other husband told her he was going to the store , and he never came back, but yet they are always trying to give us relationship advice. I started laughing because I say the same thing to my sister every time they have this conversation with her, then we both laugh at them and they both just stand there with a glare calling me disrespectful. Then I whisper to Noveen and say, The Truth Hurts look at the both of them. Then we laughed.

I got up out of the bed and stood in front of my mirror admiring my beauty and looking at my natural BBL wondering why women want to carry around a heavy ass on their back and why can’t they just the happy with the ass they got. I mean, my ass comes from a line of women on my mother’s side. I stood there looking at my butt from behind over my shoulder making sure it still has a nice shape to it because the women in my family after a while when they sit too much we get a boxy four corner ass and that is not what I want. I want mine to be a looker. I started laughing because I thought about making a t-shirt for the women in my family and even some men in my family got this booty, but on the t-shirt put I AM A Heavy Asster. I started laughing at my humor in which is usually one of a kind.

I walked out of my bedroom and closed the door loud so they can hear me and they could stop badgering Noveen about not having a man; they kept talking about it, so I knew this morning would be a doozy. I walked down the steps and stopped right before I got to the bottom and they were both hovering over Noveen so I walked over and then grandmas said Oh lawd here comes the mouthy one. I sat next to Noveen and said nothing. All I did was stare at them back and forth. They both stopped then looked at me then said, Why are you so quiet?. I sat back and said Well good morning to you?. Then I hugged Noreen and said Good morning Sis. Noreen smiled and said Good Morning Novia. Then she rolled her eyes up in her head. Then we both looked at those two, one holding the broom sweeping and the other dusting. The room became quiet then the television breaking news filled the room then we all turned to look at the television and there was some kind of protest and it was full of women then my mother said See this is just what I am trying to tell you two girls. We looked at her in total confusion and said, You tryna tell us to go out and protest with a bunch of women, well how can we find a man. She shook her head and said umm, umm, umm NO!.

Then she looked at us and said Look at these women and I bet not one of them have a man at home and look at the wildfire in their eyes they are not being loved by a man either, even if they don’t have one at home they can just have one somewhere, I bet they will eventually turn to eachother and BAM! there goes the future of our world no more babies being born the natural way. Then she stopped and stared at us. I took my lips and tightly pursed my lips sitting there in silence. Then I asked them did they feel as though a man is what a woman need not say that she needs another woman because a woman may chose to be alone.

Mother looked at me and then said, Well, I am tired of fighting trying to break this generational curse within my family because the women in my family don’t have men. Maybe one does. The men in the family go from woman to woman. There is no stability, and I just want you two to be the first. In the background I heard grandma say The First!. Then mother continued ... The first to marry and have thriving relationships that last until death do part. I looked at them and said, Well, I am not putting death do us part in my wedding vows and Noreen said. Me either. Mother came over with the broom stick tryna hit us in a playful way because we always mess with her by saying something silly pretending like we dont get the point of whatever she is talking about. Then grandma says And girls Try to Marry up not down then I said huh grandma said You two are what they call good stock your beautiful-smart-good girls-and have a lot to offer a man. Mother looked at me then said But Novia that mouth of yours your man is gonna need some kind of ear plug I laughed then said Ma, did you forget dad went deaf in his right ear and on Thanksgiving when Uncle rugby asked dad about the hearing aid in his ear. Then he told the whole family that you nagged him so much and even in the car and since you sit on the passenger side which is the right side, that is the ear that went deaf. Noreen and I started falling all over one another laughing loudly and then grandma said to mother, Yeah she is right, I remember that because I spit all my food out and Rugby spit out his liquor then everyone burst out laughing". Mother stood there with a smile and a little giggle.

Noveen and I have our own show where we stream from our bedrooms and sometimes we go out on the street and ask random people questions. We got up to go so we can plan and work on our next couple of shows. We excused ourselves and they started talking again. Grandma said ‘ In my time we went out to work at a job not sit in front of a screen all day, and that is probably the reason you two can’t find a man . Then Mother said, ‘Well, they make a shitload of money ‘. Then mother yelled, You need to name one of your shows Novia and Noveen needs a man". Then those two bursted out in the most immature laugh ever. I shook my head. then Noveen said that we should have a show and interview those two. We both hit hands and agreed. One thing for sure is we love those two girlies and we know they mean well and love us.

I could hear Noveen screaming, We got an invitation! We got an invitation!. Then I heard her feet hit the floor and running towards my bedroom. I sat up in my bed and waved my hand then said Girl, whatever this is about, you need to calm down. Then Noveen stood in my doorway, so excited then she showed me the email. I was reading it silently with lip movement and then I started screaming. Then Noveen and I started jumping up and down . Mother and grandma came to the room asking, What is all the ruckus about?. Then grandma said Maybe they will find a man through that email thing. We stopped and looked at the both of them.

Noveen started reading the email, letting them know we received an invitation to this year’s New York Gala and there will be politicians, celebrities and more. Mother and grandma walked out of the room but we were so excited., this will be a great networking opportunity for our show to interview some influential people. Then in unison, ma and grandma yelled, Focus on interviewing single men only. I looked at Noveen and we both laughed, but it really will not be a bad idea at all. I sat down on the bed then looked at Noveen and said, I believe we are being invited to this event for a reason. Noveen said I agree.

A few minutes later there was a soft knock on my bedroom door and it was ma and grandma walking in with dresses tryna get us to wear some of their dresses they had from back in the day. I picked up this one dress with fringes hanging all over it and it had a headband with a feather. I looked at my mother and all I could say to her was, I don’t want to know where or what you did in this dress but no thank you ma, but thank you for the offering. Ma and grandma took their dresses and left. Right away, Noveen and I checked our budget and got our money together for our gown and shoes. Also, we must not forget our human hair. Thank goodness we do our own hair. We went to get dressed so we can go shopping.

We called the black car service to take us downtown to Manhattan. What is funny about the way the world changed is that people like Noveen and I are just like celebrities to people, and all we do is a stream a show where we do interviews. The black car pulled up to the store New York Dress. I suggested we try a bridal store also because they have gowns there too. When we walked into the store, they greeted us and we felt like they wanted us there. That is the most important flex that should be in every store in the world. Then the sales would skyrocket. The saleswoman took us to a section with so many gowns to choose from. First, she asked Which color are you interested in?. Noveen and I looked at one another and I shrugged and told Noveen You choose the color because you are best at that kind of stuff, and we can either wear the same color or different. Noveen said Well, Novia what rhymes with the word same?. I looked at her then said Lame. She laughed, pointed at me, then she said That Part. The saleswoman walked back over and asked us what kind of event we are buying gowns for, so then she can give us more options. Noveen and I looked at eachother, then I said the New York Gala. The saleswoman paused and looked at us both like we were lying or she did not understand us. So, I leaned into her space and looked her in her eyes then said No thank you we will take out business some place else. Goodbye!. I walked off, then I looked back, and I saw Noveen walking backwards towards me. Then she yelled to the saleswoman. We will take our 40,000 and buy our ball gowns elsewhere, no commission for you. When we got outside, I asked her where is the 40,000 was and Noveen just laughed. Then we went to a bridal store we saw at the corner and found the most beautiful gowns and they even had the satin heels to match the exact gowns we chose.

When we walked in the house, we noticed the television was on but ma and grandma wasn’t there, but when we walked upstairs, I opened my door and I noticed they were in my room cleaning which was odd because they never go in my room to clean. They both reached for the garbage and the laundry bag on their way out and said, Girl, you need to clean your room, but we finished now. Then they looked at Noveen and said, Noveen your room is next. Noveen made a gesture with her hand, pointing to her room. They walked by and into her room, then she walked into my room and flopped on my bed. I asked her, What are we gonna do with those two and I think they are up to something. Noveen asked, "What
