    Early in the twentieth century, Andrew Carnegie, business magnate and philanthropist, disclosed his formula for great wealth achievement to author Napoleon Hill. Carnegie’s secret was woven through the pages of Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich, which followed a multi-year study of wealthy individuals. This book contains a very different secret, a formula to sustaining happiness, that has been put into practice by thousands of people from all walks of life and by leaders whether knowingly or through intuition. The secret to sustaining happiness is a layer deeper than the words in this book, and involves how you internalize the events in your life, along with how you prepare your body to feel happiness and navigate life’s challenges. The secret to which I refer and the underlying intuition that is tapped into is mentioned at least fifty times within this book. It is not called out directly, since it works more successfully when it is experienced. The secret is used extensively by Richard Branson and Narendra Modi. For those that are ready, you will connect deeply to it.

    You never get something for nothing! The secret to which I refer cannot be had without an investment of time and energy, although the value in terms of peace and personal freedom is far much greater than its price. The secret serves equally well to all of those that are ready for it. Education doesn’t have anything to do with it, and it never will. Somewhere, when reading these pages, the secret will connect with your intuition. When it appears you will recognize it, whether this occurs in the first part of the book or the final pages. The moment that the secret presents itself will be a turning point in your life.

    The purpose of this book is to convey facts, not fiction, and not just the what to do but also the how to do it. For those that receive the universal truth, they will receive the stimulus to make the secret of sustaining happiness their own. If you are ready for the secret, you already have half the answer within you, and the other half will appear through the pages of this book.

    Introduction

    The concept or experience of happiness is a highly coveted desire for almost all of us. Happiness is the number one thing that parents want for their children, above fame, fortune and wealth. When children are asked what they want for their parents, the number one response is happiness and peace. When people are asked what they want most for their friends, the number one answer is happiness.

    Around 2013, searches for happy and happiness on Google increased with the popularity of Pharrell Williams’ song Happy and added fuel to a movement that now cuts across North America and stretches to Dubai, which has ambitions to be the happiest and smartest city in the world, hosting international events that draw worldwide audiences. These events ultimately deal with a topic that reaches into the deepest part of our being—happiness. This book is not only about happiness, but also about the possibilities of you reaching new heights and previously uncharted levels of sustaining happiness—what will be referred to in this book as Titan Happiness™.

    Let’s start our exploration of happiness with an exercise.

    Titan Happiness™ Concepts and Definitions

    Throughout this book, we will deal with several concepts that are instrumental to our attitudes toward suffering, hardship, and happiness. These concepts are important to understanding what makes Titan Happiness™ significantly different from other books on happiness, and are defined below.

    •Rote traditions —Rote traditions are habits and ways of thinking, supported by cultural beliefs and values we have grown up with, that form our repeated ways of behaving and perceiving the world. These traditions are based on repetition, and we are so used to repeating them that they feel normal and natural to us even if they don’t make any sense at all. Titan Happiness™ asks us to break free from the rote traditions that are holding us back from sustaining happiness.

    •Prolonged suffering —In this book, we explore suffering as a form of emotional misery we choose to inflict on ourselves, by failing to shed the rote traditions that are no longer serving us. A culture that promotes suffering by encouraging its members to hang on to dysfunctional rote traditions leads to more suffering for us.

    •Mindset —We define mindset as a pattern of thinking that leads either to high performance states or low performance states. Mindset can be profoundly influenced by our rote traditions, and thus it is crucial to abandon them (particularly those regarding suffering) that keep us separated from sustaining happiness. A mindset of happiness draws more happiness to us.

    •Physiological set —Your physiological set is the structure of your physical body that leads to either higher performance states or lower performance states. Too often we think about the mind and the body as divided, separate components of us. The term physiological set highlights that our physical state has profound impacts on our mindset, as well. A physiological set of happiness draws more happiness to us.

    •Harness happiness —The concept of harnessing happiness refers to a state in which we can allow happiness to flow through us to guide our lives. Happiness is an integral part of your being.

    •Transform energy —Your personal energy consumption can be used to either prolong your suffering or to heighten your happiness. In Titan Happiness™, we find the path to transform our energy in a way that heightens our happiness, rather than dragging us back into the suffering and rote traditions that prevent us from sustaining happiness.

    •Increase performance —Increasing performance refers to the ability to transform darker thoughts, to serve you to achieve higher levels of performance. Increasing performance includes the ability to transform your core, foundational physiological deep breathing and speaking skills to higher levels of performance.

    Perspectives on Happiness

    Throughout this book, I describe many moments on my search for sustaining happiness in which I looked for wisdom and insight from great psychologists, spiritual writers, healers, and self-help gurus—all of which left me wanting more and feeling that I was missing out on under standing what happiness is and how to achieve it. I found that the dominant schools of thought in the West today seem to fall into one of a few broader categories: happiness, positive psychology, body-based models, philosophical and spiritual belief systems, and motivational models for happiness.

    International Day of Happiness and Happiness Summits

    When it comes to happiness awareness, the International Day of Happiness comes to mind most strongly. It was adopted on June 28th, 2012, when all 193 Member States of the United Nations unanimously adopted UN Resolution 66/281. The happiness movement around the world has become more and more organized in 2017 with the launch of Global Dialogue for Happiness in February 2017 in Dubai, and the launch of World Happiness Summit in March 2017 in Miami. And quite frankly, the movement is beautiful, and I am proud to be a part of it.

    Happiness-focused events bring together a tremendous cross-section of well-being and performance practices, to showcase great speakers and provide interactive sessions, using traditional approaches to happiness, performance, and well-being. I have participated in such events. The practices and traditions typically tackled the notion of happiness through cultivating a sense of community, but often neglected to provide and teach practices of deep introspection and self-reflection to deal with deeper thoughts. In other words, events often provide little opportunity to examine the rote traditions that have contributed to our suffering, and most importantly often don’t provide the specific steps solve the underlying prolonged suffering.

    Positive Psychology

    As a field of study within psychology, positive psychology continues to gain momentum through events like the International Positive Psychology Association 6th World Congress, which now attracts participants from around the world. Positive psychology is a field of study that more and more people are comfortable with talking about in the workplace. Within positive psychology, there continues to be tremendous debates related to what timeframe in a person’s life (past, present, or future) is most important for psychologists to focus on when it comes to interventions with clients.

    As an academic discipline, the prominent thinkers in positive psychology are primarily researchers with graduate and professional degrees, who typically present their findings at such conferences. The presentations are very data-driven, and key findings within presentations are typically at minimum statistically significant. Positive psychology is a promising field, and the thought process is to encourage people to have a more positive outlook on life, with generally less emphasis on peeling back layers of the onion to go deeper into the psyche. This is typically a slow process on its own, in comparison to Titan Happiness™, for a specific reason. I strongly believe that the mind and positive physiology go hand
