Author

Evelyn Ellis

Evelyn Ellis has had a passion for historical romance from an early age. She liked the spicy ones best, but they were never spiced in the right way (or enough) for her taste, so she began writing her own erotica. She particularly enjoys writing erotic short stories and novellas. The shorter format allows for deeper character examination over the course of a very hot erotic story. Her stories are standalone and serial short fiction with themes that explore taboo sexual subjects from Medieval time to the Swinging Sixties, in settings all over the globe.

    SHARING TESS

    sparks in the rain

    San Francisco 1850

DARIUS CANE’S sleek black carriage rolled up in front of Tess huddled under the awning of the hotel. The rain was driving down in sheets. Tess watched the carriage approach, trying to catch a glimpse of the richest man in California.

Cane lived on Nob Hill, had a knack for finding gold, but his ruthlessness made him a dangerous man to know. On this morning, his carriage stopped and the door opened. Tess was drenched to the skin and had not eaten since the previous morning. The man who owned three active gold mines was offering her a means to get out of the rain.

She was not a fool. Cane was too far out of her class for his offer of a lift to be anything but disreputable but she was starving, miles from home and the rain was the final straw.

Tess dashed toward the gleaming carriage.

Darius Cane had turned thirty-eight in December and was still unmarried. His hair was as black as his eyes. He had a lean brown face and full thirsting lips. An unattainable, powerful and enigmatic man. Tess Linton was beautiful, young and poor, and in constant peril of losing her virtue in the rough neighborhood she lived in.

Months later, after she had lost everything—including her virtue, Tess thought back to that moment of the mysterious arrival of his carriage. She should not have got inside. She should have trusted her instincts. But danger is only obvious in hindsight. In the moment, all desperate young girls get inside.

TESS WAS SOAKING wet and dripped on the leather seat. In stark contrast to the poor souls who were scrambling on the pavement to find shelter, she felt like a queen.

Her rescuer sat opposite, his black gaze fixed upon her.

Good morning. My name is Darius Cane.

Good morning, sir. Thank you for giving me a lift.

His coal black hair was combed off his face. He wore a black cloak, a white shirt and a dark green waistcoat. His neck was strong and his shoulders took up the width of the back seat. Seeing him up close was overwhelming. Tess tried not to stare at his physique.

    Have you eaten? he
