Spring 1970 ~ Maine, USA

THE APARTMENT BUILDING was a squat three storey brick number on a tree-lined street in a quiet town. A throwback to a simpler time, built right after the Second World War to house returning GIs and their new wives. Three tiers of windows faced the street; curtains were drawn over each to shut out the sound of the rain that fell in grey sheets.

Danielle lifted her face to the building. Rain pelted her eyes and hair. Derek had peeled away before she could get her key out and get inside—before realizing that she didn’t have her key at all because it was locked inside her apartment.

Midnight. No one was awake. She could ring and get someone out of bed. Danielle shrank from the idea; she’d only moved in last month. She didn’t know the other tenants well enough to bother them. She ducked around the side of the building to try the basement door. It was locked too but there was a light was on in apartment 3C. The guy who lived down the hall from her was still up. She went to the back where someone had put in a little garden. No luck getting in by the back door either, but a kitchen light was on in 3C.

A man suddenly appeared at the window, a black form against the yellow light. Danielle picked up a pebble and threw it. It hit the glass with a tinkling sound and caught his attention. She waved. The man moved slightly. The window opened.

Golly, I’m glad to see you! I live down the hall from you in 3A. I’ve locked myself out. Do you think you could come down and let me in? I’m really sorry but you’re my last hope. I have no place else to go.
