Shades of Tomorrow
Did you ever have the feeling that the whole world disappeared right before your eyes—that there was no tomorrow? Then, you felt unfulfilled because you didn’t live out all your dreams.
People wake wake each and every day, expecting the world to stay the same. They plan out all the days, hours, even moments inside their heads—kind of like forming memories before they even happen. This is what’s been running through my head for the last, few days; now I feel it’s time to tell my story…
I woke all alone on that fateful day. I happened to be asleep downstairs in the basement because I wanted to keep an eye on the leaky pipe which needed to be fixed.
There were no sounds coming from upstairs, which indicated that my son and wife were still asleep. I smiled, knowing how much they liked to get their Saturday rest.
I went into the other room and turned on the light. What I saw there was much worse than a leaky pipe. The entire roof was collapsed, and there were large amounts of what seemed to be dust on the floor. The dust mixed had with the water.
Despite all my best efforts to look around, I could not find the source. I knew that I would have to go upstairs to see what was going on.
As much as I hated to do this, I felt like I needed to wake up Elise. We were going to need much more than a plumber if we wanted to have this mess cleaned up!
I mumbled to myself, wondering if our insurance company was going to cover this as I moved my hand to open the door. Before I even had a moment to think, more dust had been sprinkled all over me, drowning me as it came flooding into the basement.
I could barely breathe, but my first thoughts were of Elise and Tyler. All I cared about was if they were all right and where I could find them.
Luckily, my arms and legs were enough to pull me up before the dust was enough to drown me and trap me there forever. Just as soon as I pushed through the first batch of dust, more fell on top of my head—determined to erase me from existence.
Panic overtook me, I screamed out my wife and son’s names, hoping to God that I would hear a response. When I did not hear anything, I knew that I had to get out of there and find out what was going on. Adrenaline coursed through my veins, making me stronger, though my head was acting out of fear.
What seemed like moments later, I managed to make my way up to what used to be our first story. There was nothing left of the second story of our house. My heart sank. This meant that I would not find Elise and Tyler, safely sleeping and snoozing in their beds.
I hoped that this was some kind of nightmare; I hoped that my heavy breathing would allow me to wake up soon! There was only one thing I could think to do, and I was determined to make my way outside. Could whatever was going on here be happening to the neighbors as well? I knew that it would take me not much longer to find out.
Once I'd managed to free myself from the mounds of dust which piled on top of me, I made my way onto the street or, rather, what was left of it. Just as I had suspected and feared, all the other houses were reduced to piles of dust all around me.
There was no sign of human life anywhere around, as all the grass and trees around were gone. I looked in the sky to find little winged birds flying overhead, but I did not see them, nor did I hear their familiar cries. There were no sirens in the distance, and no lights shining on to indicate any kind of disaster.
If everyone else was gone, I knew that there was no chance that Elise and Tyler had made it. I wanted to cry, but no sounds came out of my throat. There was only the raspy breath which was a result of the dust which filled my lungs as I emerged above the ground.
I was greatly concerned because of the fact that there seemed to be no plant or animal life around.
With the possibility of no food sources, I didn't know what I was going to eat when I eventually had to. I had to try not to think about that until it
