Blood Pressure Solution - Margaret Schmitt, R.D.

    Introduction

Thanks for downloading this book. It's my firm belief that it will provide you with all the answers to your questions.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2014 over one billion people worldwide have hypertension. In the US, hypertension is responsible for 410,000 deaths in 2014. For people with hypertension, most drugs target the symptoms of the disease and are not designed to address the actual source of hypertension or provide a long-term solution. With this book, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of hypertension and learn about the different treatment options that are currently available.

It is a common condition in Westernized countries, particularly among the elderly. In non-Westernized countries, where people are more physically active, eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains and have a low salt and alcohol in- take, hypertension is rare, even in the elderly population. It is not an inevitable consequence of getting older, as many people think; rather, it is usually a result of a few lifestyle factors. Of course, hypertension can also run in the family, which means there is sometimes a genetic component. Unfortunately, a person with hypertension stands a greater chance of developing cardiovascular (heart) disease, stroke, kidney disease or impaired vision than a person with blood pressure.

    ––––––––

Hypertension seldom gives rise to symptoms, which are the body warning mechanism that something is wrong. This means the condition can go undetected for years or even decades. In the meantime, the problems related to hypertension will invariably progress and become more serious. For many, it’s not until a health emergency takes them to the accident and emergency department of their local hospital that their hypertension is detected. That’s why getting checked blood pressure on a regular basis is so important, especially if you belong to a high-risk group, such as having a parent with hypertension, or if you live on your nerves and smoke cigarettes. The typical hypertension candidate is overweight, sedentary, over 60 and a smoker.

He or she may already have high cholesterol or even diabetes. There are plenty of other people with hypertension who don’t fit this model at all; however, this makes it doubly important that every one of us should undergo regular blood pressure screening. Hypertension is on the increase and in the next few years is expected to rise by approximately 25 percent in Westernized countries, affecting one in three of the adult population. Currently, one out of four adults in the West has hypertension. In the UK, around 50 per cent of people over 65 have it, as have some 70 percent of those in their 70s. These figures are truly staggering when you consider that hypertension is very easy to diagnose and treat. Indeed, the condition is one of the most preventable causes of death in the developed world. In the UK, hypertension has become the second most common reason for a person to visit his or her doctor.

That said statisticians believe the condition is only adequately treated in one-fifth of cases. Even more shocking is the estimation that 35 percent of people with hypertension are unaware that they have it. Hypertension usually lasts a lifetime, but can be effectively lowered to within the healthy range. Public awareness of the dangers of hypertension is greater now than ever before, which means that more and more people are likely to that they are in a high-risk category and will therefore ask to have their blood pressure checked by their doctor. There are still plenty of people diagnosed with hypertension who remain ignorant to its dangers and therefore fail to make essential lifestyle adjustments, or even bother to take their medication on a daily basis.

Don’t let this happen to you! Arm yourself with knowledge and take all the practical steps required to improve your future. Lifestyle modifications, blood pressure medications, if necessary can be of enormous benefit, for they slow the progression of the cardiovascular (heart) disease. They also reduce the risk of stroke and many more dangers.

This book details the symptoms, risk factors and causes of hypertension. It will help you learn more about beneficial lifestyle changes, the DASH diet plan, herbal supplements and medications that will allow you to take control of your health and start lowering blood pressure for good.

    Chapter 1: Blood Pressure/Hypertension?

Different activities make blood pressure go up or down. For example, running to catch the bus will increase blood pressure. On the other hand, when you’re asleep, your blood pressure is relatively low. Such changes in blood pressure are normal.

Some people have blood pressure that is high all or most of the time. Their blood constantly pushes on the walls of their arteries with higher than normal force. These people have a condition called hypertension. Hypertension is dangerous because it makes your heart work harder and damages your blood vessels.

    What Causes Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects millions of people of all ages including children and teens. Unfortunately, the most dangerous thing about hypertension is that you can live for years without even knowing that you have it. In fact, about one-third of all people who have the condition do not realize they have it. This is why hypertension also often referred to as silent killer.  Read on for a more thorough explanation of hypertension and its most common causes.

Basically, hypertension means that there is high pressure, or tension, in your arteries. Arteries are the vessels that carry blood from your heart to every tissue and organ within your body. Normal hypertension considered to be anything that is below a reading of 120 over 80. Blood pressure that is between 120 over 80 and 139 over 89 is referred to as pre-hypertension and readings of 140 to 90 or higher are considered to be high. The top number is what is called the systolic blood pressure and is the reading for the amount of pressure on the arteries as the heart pumps blood into them.

The bottom number is what is known as the diastolic pressure, which represents the amount of pressure on the arteries when the heart is in a relaxed state. The diastolic pressure reading reflects the lowest pressure that your arteries are exposed to. When hypertension is high, it can lead to a vast array of serious medical conditions. Results of hypertension are an elevation in the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure can increase your risk of developing such medical conditions as heart disease, hardening of arteries, stroke and kidney disease.

However, these conditions typically only develop due to chronic high blood pressure. It is for this reason that it is vitally important for you to have the blood pressure checked on a regular basis. In this way, if you are found to have hypertension, steps can be taken to bring
