Teach Almost Anyone Almost Anything - Karen Fields
Hello & Welcome
––––––––
This book is intended for entrepreneurs, and small business owners, who've decided to produce a course, or another form of training or how-to
material as part of their overall business strategy.
––––––––
We'll be working through a number of concepts that are part of the Instructional Design discipline, but don't panic — our goal isn't to turn you an Instructional Designer. Instead, we want to take advantage of the wisdom behind the discipline and focus on actionable steps that will be genuinely useful to you as you create your course.
––––––––
These steps will help you to clarify goals – those of your business and also those of your students. Once you're set on those items you'll able to answer a number of other questions whose answers will form the foundation of your course. This process will enable you to quickly author a course that meets all of your objectives.
––––––––
This book contains a number of templates. They are intended to be printed and filled in, or completed on- screen. Don't be shy about committing your thoughts to paper (or to an electronic document). You'll find that the process of actually writing down your ideas about choosing, organizing, and ultimately presenting your content is as important as the content itself.
Why Am I Doing This?
––––––––
As you embark upon designing your course, it probably pays to take a few minutes and ask yourself, Why Am I Doing This?
––––––––
SERIOUSLY. ASK YOURSELF. There's no right or wrong answer. If you're trying to make money — great. If you're trying to educate for any number of non-monetary reasons — that's also great. The nature of your motive isn't important, but it is important that you understand it. Your motive will be the driving force behind your course design choices.
––––––––
Since you're a business person, you probably have a product or service that you want to sell. Perhaps your course is intended as an introduction to that product or service. Or, perhaps the course itself is your product, and it will be your primary source of revenue. Both approaches are equally valid, but if your course is a lead in
to additional business opportunities
