    Chapter One: Hushed Tones

    I met Michel online.

He responded to my drunkenly-posted profile the same night I wrote it. As I scrolled through inboxful of responses the next morning, the messages I’d received were appallingly comical - all except for his.

I’d posted ads before, mostly for fun - to read the absurd responses some men wrote, to feel wanted, even, sometimes. It wasn’t often that any message seemed very genuine. Michel wrote with an accent, which was what intrigued me first. I heard his voice in my head before I heard it in person. He’d sent a picture, as I had requested in my ad, though there was no telling if it was actually him in the photo; but something told me it was. Tall, handsome, with distinguished features and intelligent eyes. It didn’t take me long to know that I wanted to sleep with him.

I drafted a reply to him, breaking my own rule of not giving my phone number and suggested we meet at a local coffee shop. Asking to meet always seemed easier
