Unreserved Conservatory

The uneven sidewalk tripped me up again.

When are they going to get this redone? I complained, taking an unnecessarily high, drunken step over the next crack in the sidewalk. The tall, handsome college boy walking beside me shrugged dramatically and laughed a long, too-loud laugh that was stutteringly punctuated. I laughed at his laugh.

He stumbled forward to kiss me, his lips meeting mine clumsily. Despite the awkwardness of our movements, Hassan was a good kisser.

Right over there. Come with me - quick! He grabbed my hand and ducked behind the decorative wall of the conservatory. It was a large, well-lit building, right next to the main path that led to the cluster of Greek buildings on the south side of the campus. Groups of students made their way to and from various parties, their loud hoots and hollers blaring for a few seconds and then fading into the distance.

The conservatory stood stark in the light of the full moon. Decorative lights were spaced evenly along the front of the building. Along its side, its architecture mimicked the lines on a sheet of music. Ornamental, concrete walls formed tiny nooks along the outside of the conservatory. It was into one of these nooks, one with a flowering tree blocking it further from view, which my tipsy date pulled me.

I need you, he said, pressing me against the hard, grey concrete.

Here? I asked nervously, peering out from the shadows. Hidden from all but the most prying of eyes, we were out of sight for the most part. I leaned back against the wall. He nodded and kissed me again and ground his hips into mine.
