Introduction to Ketogenic Diet - Beth Foster
Introduction
In case you missed it, the ketogenic diet is one of the classics. When you are on this diet, you consume just the right amount of protein for your body to grow properly and sufficient calories so that you maintain the proper weight for your height and age. It is one of the low-carb diets used to treat refractory pediatric epilepsy. It is a high-fat diet that allows the body to burn up fat instead of carbohydrates. It does this by replacing the normal glucose that is converted from the carbs you consume with fat. When there is an insufficient amount of carbohydrates for the body to burn for energy, the liver will replace those carbs with fat, turning it into ketone bodies and fatty acids.
Some foods to avoid would be anything that is high in carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of starch, pasta, sugar and grains. Foods used to replace these would be high in fat, like butter, cream and nuts of all kinds.
This book will help you decide whether or not this is the diet for you. There are so many diets out there, it’s sometimes hard to find the right one. Every person has a unique body chemistry. No two persons are exactly alike – not even twins! Even with twins, you will notice that one may have bigger ears or a weaker heart or a specific disease, such as diabetes, which is one of the ailments this diet helps control.
The Ketogenic Diet was used specifically by health care professionals to treat pediatric epilepsy, having been developed to help treat the symptoms and reduce seizures in children. Since the 1920s, it has been used for anyone who finds the benefits are useful for their goals.

There are many benefits to the ketogenic diet as long as you are doing it right and adjusting in some areas that will lean toward benefiting your specific goals, rather than the broad scheme of things.
