    Dedication

This book is dedicated to my champions who told me not to give up along the way. Yeah, it’s a long story. They stuck with me when I wanted to give up. I’m forever grateful! You know who you are! xoxo

This work also wouldn’t be possible without my dear husband who puts up with me night and day, working long hours and weekends on my writing. He knows to throw chocolate and flowers at me before approaching some days! Love him.

I also can’t begin to say thank you enough to my editor, Elizabeth, who works tirelessly to make me a better author. I’m forever appreciative of everything you do! Thank you!

    Prologue

    Renegade, Colorado, USA

    Three Weeks Earlier…

Dark sexual need spun through Dean Montero’s body, making him completely breathless and feeling alone. He wanted to get fucked so, so hard. He could almost taste the cock ramming down the back of his throat when he thought about it. God, he needed it—craved it even. He scanned the bar as his heart thrummed in his chest at the possibility of getting laid tonight.

Too bad he was working behind it. It made taking home a one-night stand difficult. Most wanted the party to start early and go late into the night—not at closing time. God, he was so lonely. When had he woken up alone? How had it happened? He couldn’t believe he was even considering a one-night stand. This was so unlike him, but one bad breakup had changed how he handled men.

    Vodka. Double.

The guy appeared before Dean as though he popped out of thin air. He made the drink and bills were handed over to him. He sighed. No one paid the bartender much attention unless he was the one serving a drink. He felt useless.

    Forgotten.

    Unwanted.

There were days Dean wanted to leave everything behind. He wanted to pack his shit, get on his bike, and drive until he got to the end of the world and fell off of it. Unfortunately, his dreams of hitting the open road and leaving his life behind were not going to happen. He was sick and stuck in a meaningless job with a bioscience degree no one cared about. He always felt like there was so much more out there waiting for him. As though he was meant for something out of his reach. It was as though he never belonged where he was. He should probably move again. Every town needed a bartender. And his restlessness tended to calm down after he moved.

Investing in the bar had been a way of taking back control of his life. Now it was like an albatross he couldn’t shake. He wanted out. And if the bar weren’t so crowded, he would have walked right out the back door. His fucked-up sense of obligation and responsibility kept his feet firmly in place.

He was tired. The drunks were getting wild and grabby at the waitresses. Dean signaled the bouncer to take care of a problem starting in the corner with one of the regulars. Was it ever going to end?

All of a sudden the hair on the back of Dean’s neck stood on end as though someone were staring at him. He looked toward the entrance where he saw his brother Jaxon for the first time in two years. He’d changed. He looked older and a tad bit wiser, as though he’d grown up and was ready to be an adult. It was about fucking time in Dean’s opinion. Jaxon spent too much energy being a shit over the years for him not to grow up fast.

The second thing Dean noticed was that he was not alone. Another man was at his side, but there was a second guy who stuck to the shadows and looked as though he just spent all week partying at one of those comic book conventions. What the hell was he wearing? It looked like something a fighter jet pilot would wear. The pilot moved within the shadows, the light from the wall sconces revealing the symbols on his clothing. They were so unique that they looked real. Who was he, and what the hell was he doing with his brother? Jaxon crossed the room alone, coming over to the bar to stand in front of him.

Dean leaned in close to be heard over the rock music. What are you doing here?

I came to ask you something.

Dean grabbed a bar rag and started wiping down a glass. Distraction was the best medicine to deal with his brother right now. Ask away. I’m obviously not busy.

I’m thinking about moving away and I wanted you to come with me.

Laughter spilled from Dean’s lips. Where? You’re not talking about that shit hole you’re working at in Puerto Rico?

No, someplace else. I’m no longer with NASA. Jaxon leaned in closer. Look. I need to talk to you. Someplace privately where we won’t be overheard.

Annoyance moved over Dean’s face. He whistled to another bartender to take over for a few minutes. I’ll be back in ten minutes. Dean went through the kitchen and came out at the other side of the bar. His brother was waiting for him there. Come with me. We’ll go to my office.

They headed into his office. Jaxon closed the door behind, locking out all the noise of the bar. Dean dropped down into the chair behind his desk, reveling in the much-needed quiet. He was tired. It’d been a really long night, and he had dealt with enough bullshit to last ten lifetimes. He needed to move on from Renegade. He needed to find a job that satisfied him.

What he really needed to do was find a job in his field to satisfy him. Dean ran his hand through his hair as he stared at his brother who was pacing back and forth, which wasn’t easy considering how small his office was. Jaxon stopped in front of his desk. There was a look in his eyes that cut hard, scaring Dean. He’d only seen that look once before in his lifetime—the day their best friend Evan died.

    What do you want, Jaxon?

Jaxon shook his head and looked as though he were choosing his words carefully. Look, I’m sorry for how I left things. I was upset when I found out. You should have told me.

Here we go again. All of Dean’s resolve obliterated into a million different pieces that he didn’t want to have to put back together again. He was tired of this old song and dance with his family. It’s nobody’s damn business if I like sticking my dick into dudes.

Jaxon leaned his palms onto the desk and leaned down. I’m gay too.

Dean’s mouth fell open. You’re not fucking gay. I would have known…

Jaxon smiled wryly as Dean’s voice trailed off. I guess we both have some secrets we’re keeping. I wasn’t ready to come out after I saw how mom and dad treated you. I was a coward for not standing up for you.

Tears rushed to Dean’s eyes, but he was determined to not let them fall. He didn’t like to show weakness in front of anyone. I thought…

It was a misunderstanding. I wasn’t pushing you away. I had tried to call and tell you, Jaxon said.

I wouldn’t listen. Dean took a deep breath as he swallowed back the emotion that wanted to spill. He narrowed his gaze on Jaxon. What’s going on? Are you in some type of trouble?

Excitement moved over Jaxon’s face as he leaned in closer. We made contact at the NASA satellite research facility I was stationed at in Puerto Rico.

Confusion swam through Dean’s mind. Contact? As in you made contact with aliens?

His words stumbled so quickly from his mouth that Dean wasn’t sure he understood what he was saying.

Yes. It’s the most amazing thing. Their technology isn’t like anything we have or ever will be capable of.

Fear raced moved over Dean’s skin. There was something odd about his brother. He looked different. He seemed way off. What are you saying? What happened to you?

Jaxon’s face took on a faraway dreamlike quality. He looked as though he was reliving something he didn’t know how to explain. That scared Dean. He’d never seen his brother looking so sure about his future before.

"I was taken aboard the Titan and then onto the Titus."

    What are you doing here?

    I came back…for you.

Dean shook his head. I don’t know.

"One of the men I’m with is the commander of the Titus. They were sent here to look for compatible life. Their world has lost the ability to reproduce. They need men."

Then you’ve come to the wrong man. I’m not going to be sleeping with the ladies.

No, it’s not like that. They are a race of males. I don’t completely understand it, but they only have males with egg sacks. They’re no longer reproducing the sperm sack.

Dean shook his head. This isn’t funny if this is another one of your jokes.

It’s not. I want you to come with us. I can’t do this without you. You’re the only family I have left.

    What about the bar?

    What about it?

Dean stood up. He had wanted a chance to walk away from everything, and now he had it. All he had to do was go with his brother. I’ve worked for the last three years to build this business up from the ground. I’ve invested everything I have into it. How can I just walk away?

How can you not? It’s amazing out there.

I’m not one of those guys who is meant for this type of life.

"How do you know? I can’t leave you behind. I can’t do this without you. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. Nothing is holding you back. You should come with
