    PREFACE

This novella wraps up the Gasoline story. It came to be because I didn’t like how the last one dropped off and the rest of the guys’ tale was woven into other bands’ books. I needed to give you the whole thing from their POV. So here we have it!

Dean Johnson is a character most hate, but no one knows who he really is. This book gave me the chance to show you. He begged for a point of view the entire time I was re-editing the Gasoline series. I gave him an epilogue, but he wanted more. That is how this book started in his POV.

We start off within the same hour that Forever Urges left off. Dean is alone with his thoughts. As you have already seen in previous books, this is not always a good thing. He is trying, though. His baggage normally weighs him down to the point of destruction. Can he can keep his demons at bay long enough to become stable in his sobriety? Read on to find out.

    DEDICATION

A special thanks to the ladies who helped make this re-editing project possible: Kathy, Patricia, Donna, Anita, Traci, Christa, Stephanie, Sonia, the Donna and Stephanie duo, LaDonna, Coralee, and Michelle.

This book had limited musical inspiration, mostly due to the dark theme. Avenged Sevenfold, Nothing More, Papa Roach and Seether… all helped me lose the real world and focus on what Dean had to say.

Remember that an addict is never cured. They need to fight with every breath to stay clean. If you know someone who is going through the struggle, be there for them. They need all the support they can get. We have lost too many to the fight. Let them know you will love them no matter what. They just may need to hear it!

    CHAPTER ONE

Dean Johnson, vocalist of Gasoline, sat in the backseat as he watched the world go by. He had a lot on his mind. The overnight pass he had obtained was well earned. He had worked hard to follow the program in the rehab facility his bandmates had gotten him in to.

It had been three weeks since he had attempted suicide yet again. His emotions were still mixed up, but he was finally on the road to recovery. The erratic moods had been mostly due to a woman he thought he loved and his decision to start using again. Both were huge mistakes that he regretted.

Dominic Spinelli, the band’s lead guitarist, drove his Jeep toward Atlantic City. You all right back there? He glanced up at the rearview mirror. Dean seemed to be upset. Did you change your mind?

No. Dean smiled at Noelle Young in the passenger seat. I’m just thinking.

Noelle reached back to Dean. If you need to talk, we’re both here for you. She was apprehensive about Dean being around alcohol, but Dominic promised to watch Dean carefully.

Is anyone from your band coming? Dean was truly curious. Noelle’s bandmates were cool.

She pursed her lips. Emilio and Mitchell said they would be there. She was the lead singer for Winter Winds.

Dean sighed. They were on their way to Tommy Fischer’s New Year’s Eve party. He was their bassist and hosted many parties. Dean usually looked forward to those events. They always had hot girls and anything was possible. Typical rock star type celebrations.

At that moment, he wondered if it was smart to surround himself with temptation. The party would be nothing compared to the tour, though. I can handle people drinking. Alcohol had never been his thing. He did like a beer once in a while and did shots with friends, but he didn’t need it. Not like he had needed to get high.

He knew Tommy didn’t allow drugs in his home. However, someone could sneak something in. He wanted to stay clean. The disappointment in his bandmates’ faces every time he failed haunted him. He had no intention of accepting anything, no matter what it was.

From what he knew of the guest list, many were clean and sober. He was still scared that he would be offered something and not be able to resist. That would blow up in his face. I can’t let that happen.

    *** ♫♪♫♪ ***

A few hours into the party, Dean was still sober. He had refused all offers of drugs and alcohol. It seemed like he would get through the night without any issue.

You bastard! Mackenzie Winters stalked toward Dean.

His eyes opened wide when he noticed Brandon Knight’s girlfriend. The Wicked End lead guitarist would kill him if he laid another finger on his girl.

Dean wasn’t ready to face what he had done to her. She obviously wanted to confront him. He almost panicked. Quickly, he backpedaled until he was almost at the end of the hallway.

I said I was sorry. Dean put his hands up in surrender. She didn’t falter. He cringed. Then he noticed the door to Tommy’s bedroom was slightly ajar. He rushed inside.

Mackenzie followed Dean, furious. Why the fuck do you think an apology would solve what you did? She shoved him and closed the bedroom door.

I don’t know what else I can say. Dean cringed when she slugged him in the gut. He doubled over. I’m an asshole. Memories of the two incidents flashed through his mind.

Mackenzie glared at Dean. What you did was inexcusable!

I know. Dean put his hands together, almost in prayer. I’m sorry. I was high. I swear I’m clean. Never again. I won’t touch you. He intended to keep that promise.

Her fist connected with his jaw. No you won’t.

He hit the floor and whimpered. When sober, he was terrible in a fight. Not that he could defend himself from a woman at that point in his life.

The door opened, and Brandon walked in. Dean prayed that Brandon didn’t join in the fight. He likely would not survive another beating from Brandon. The last one was well deserved but painful as hell. He closed his eyes and hoped for the best.

Brandon glanced at Mackenzie. There you are. Then he noticed Dean on the floor What the fuck? He touch you again?

No! I swear. Dean held his arms over his face. I didn’t. Please. I’ll never touch her again.

You tried to rape her, asshole! Brandon screamed. He wanted to kill Dean. The rage had come back full force.

Mackenzie pushed Brandon back. Stop. This is my problem. We talked about this. I needed to face him.

With a shake of his head, Brandon stomped out and slammed the door shut.

I’m sorry, came a quiet voice. I was in the bathroom.

Dean turned to Crystal Atkinson of Triple Threat in the bathroom doorway. Oh shit. He didn’t want everyone to know what he had done. He was quite ashamed of it.

Shut up. Mackenzie kicked Dean in the side. Get the hell outta here, fucker.

He didn’t hesitate. When he entered the
