    CHAPTER ONE

We’re all set for Monday at nine. Angie closed her eyes when the line disconnected. A glance at her list of calls to make intensified her migraine. How the hell am I going to finish this? She groaned when someone knocked on her door. Come in.

A young man appeared. Just wanted to let you know I’m here.

Um… Angie studied his face but nothing came to her. Here for what?

    My interview. I’m your 2:00.

She pulled up her calendar and found his name in bold. Sorry. It’s been a very long day.

That’s fine. I can wait. He grinned, showing off dimples.

Damn, if I didn’t feel like my head’s going to explode, I’d… No I wouldn’t. She took a deep breath to banish the fantasy of bedding a much younger man. The company frowned on fraternizing in any form. I’ll have to find me a stud elsewhere. Not that I’m in any condition to pick up men.

Ma’am? Should I come back another time?

Angie’s head snapped up, and the room spun. If you take a seat at the desk to your left, I’ll be with you soon. Just as he disappeared, her phone rang. South Florida Financial, how can I help you? When the other person spoke, she cringed.

After the call ended, Elissa, the department’s administrative assistant, poked her head in. Your 3:00 just canceled. Should I set her up for Monday?

Sure, but after eleven. Angie rubbed her temples and shut her eyes. I have a benefits presentation at nine.

    You OK?

Angie shrugged. I’ll get through it.

I’ve never seen you in this much pain. Elissa stepped into the room. Did you take your migraine pills?

Took two and they did nothing. Angie looked up. I have so much to do today, including interview that hottie out there.

At least you haven’t lost your libido.

Like I could miss how good he looks. Angie sighed. Tell him he’s hired. She tried to laugh, but the pain took over again.

Go home. I’ll take care of him and any emergencies. You can beat the traffic too.

Angie stared at her desk. I have a meeting at four.

I already postponed it to tomorrow. You look like hell. Go home.

Unsure how she’d arrived safely, Angie parked her SUV in the garage of her home. Eyes closed, she held her head in her hands. The pain made it difficult to see. It finally hit her that she should have called her son for a ride. Too late now.

Several cars and a lone motorcycle sat in the driveway. That meant her eighteen-year-old son, Christian, had friends over. Because of the throbbing, she’d hoped the house would be quiet. His friends were usually considerate though.

When she decided to get out of the car, she thought the pain had lessened. The light hit her, and she cringed. This is not good.

She walked inside and passed the living room. Through the sliding glass doors, she saw about ten teenagers and young adults on the patio. It was 95 degrees out, so she didn’t understand how they could stand it. Then she noticed water around the pool edge.

They lived in Coral Springs, Florida. The small city was just south of Boca Raton. Most residents were northern transplants, like them. Angie and her husband had moved from New York City to the South after his company laid him off, and the job market dried up. 9/11 had changed their lives in many ways. It was the reason Derek, her deceased husband, had signed up for the Marines.

Before Angie entered the kitchen, she closed her eyes for a moment. That should’ve given her five minutes of relief. Even that did nothing. As she approached the sliding glass doors, she tried not to portray her pain, so Christian wouldn’t worry.

As soon as she opened the door, Luca, the motorcycle owner, glanced up. He saw the agony in her expression. If he offered to help, it might reveal his longtime crush on her. Christian wouldn’t appreciate it. Since Luca was only twenty-two, he had no idea how she would react either.

Instead, he asked, Are you OK?

"I’m fine, but can you lower the
