    Chapter One

    NASA Field Office-Puerto Rico

    Present Day

    Holy shit.

    Cooper Hart’s mouth dropped open, and he spilled the cooling coffee on the way to his mouth down his shirt and onto his pants. He set it aside before he dumped more on his laptop and absently swiped at the coffee on his clothing as his gaze went back to the screen. They were not alone. He always knew there was intelligent life out there in another galaxy, but he never thought he would live to see the day when they made first contact. Tears misted his eyes.

    Would he live to see first contact? Nope.

    He wasn’t going to live to see that day. Stage four cancer was stealing his life away. The tumor on his neck was painful as shit. His last round of chemo failed. They were talking about enrolling him in a research study back in the states. The MRI they did, just in case he decided to do the study, showed that the tumor hadn’t reached his brain or his testicles.

    So, both heads were in good working order as far as he was concerned. He wasn’t about to hand himself over to play with unregulated medicine that might work and make his dick shrivel off. Fuck that.

    He wasn’t going anywhere for the last few months of his life. There was no cure for stage four. It was treatable—but did he really want to spend the last few months of his life chasing every cancer cell in his body just to tack on a year, maybe two? Perhaps. Cooper worried his lip with his bottom teeth.

    NASA scientist Cooper Hart who was born and raised in small town America, stared at the evidence coming through on his laptop. This was real. Sweat broke out on his forehead. They had contact—real, fucking, out of this world contact from an intelligent life form.
