    Prologue

    Royal Family Compound

    Turitan

Prince Tavek Salvin flexed the muscles in his forearms as he stared down at the cuffs. He was on his knees and stripped bare—left only with a cloth covering his hips. He knew he was the most hated Turitan of his world. The chains glowed a violent blue between his wrists. They’d beaten him to the point where he didn’t care if he lived or died. He knelt in front of his captors, hoping that one of them would show sympathy for his plight. He looked around the room, trying to spot a weak link amongst them.

    There were none.

After, Elian and Rewn had left their home world, Prince Edden’s men had caught up with him. This fight was going to happen inside the palace compound—too bad there were not enough of the Royal Guard on his side. The few who had helped him escape were nowhere to be found. Tavek had a bad feeling about what had happened to them.

Tavek rolled his shoulders. He didn’t deserve their sympathy or his freedom. He deserved only punishment for not giving or caring more about the people of his world. He’d been misled by his family. It was no excuse that he didn’t know any better. Over the last few weeks, he’d done a lot of growing up.

What felt like a lifetime ago, he’d awakened to what sounded like the Tyrant firing its weapons. Not possible. All use of force needs to go through him. He jumped out of bed, rushing up to the flight deck in time to see the Torrent crash into the mountainside. The first officers of the Tyrant had been given orders from his home world to blast it out of the sky. What happened after made his blood run cold.

He’d been beaten, tossed out of the ship and left for dead. Then rescued by Elian and taken home to reclaim the right to the throne.

    He was in trouble.

Now, his brother, Prince Edden, listened to his advisors argue about what to do with him. No one wanted him. Could he blame them? He had tainted royal blood.

Edden looked at him with hate-filled eyes. Sacrifice him to the Ritual Hunt before the games begin.

No. He was being sentenced to death. Never had he imagined that he would die as a participant in the game. He was dragged to his feet when the chains were yanked upward. Pain rushed through his forearms from hours of being tethered. There was no way out of this. He was going to die.

Cold fear raced through Tavek when he thought about how sadistic his brother could be when he was betrayed. If the gods of the universe were listening to his plea, he hoped there was someone out there who could save him.

    Chapter One

    NASA Field Office

    Puerto Rico

Ryan Kodiak stared up at the sky as the ship went streaking across the clouds. Ryan cupped his hand over his prescription sunglasses. The remote research facility was swarming with field agents from so many offices that Ryan hadn’t even heard of all of them—CIA, FBI and then there was one who didn’t like to talk. It was shocking that the US government had sent so many. Most had finished up for the day and were heading out when Ryan caught sight of the UFO, but a few were still chatting by their vehicles in the parking lot. They’d missed the ship racing by. He wasn’t about to call any of them inside to go over what he may or may not have seen. He didn’t want them there while he figured out what exactly it was he saw.

He blinked. Was it a trick of the light? Had he imagined it? The craft had moved so fast and banked hard in a way that was impossible. He wasn’t sure what he saw. His sunglasses did little to shield his gaze from the brightness of the sunlight and his eyesight wasn’t the best. He lifted his hand to follow the unidentified craft racing by. After several NASA field agents had disappeared mysteriously, they’d set up cameras to find out what the heck was going on out there. So far, they hadn’t caught anything out of the ordinary—until today.

In a rush, Ryan raced into the field office. He was alone. Finally. He dropped his lunch onto the table next what was once Cooper’s desk. Hungry, he’d gone into town to grab a bite to eat, thinking nothing would happen while he was gone. Wrong. Ryan ditched his sunglasses for his thick glasses. Despite laser vision surgery, he still had horrible eyesight. He was lucky he could still drive. He pushed his thick nerd glasses up and leaned in as he pulled up the video feed, hoping it caught the spacecraft racing by. He watched the video over and over again. What the actual fuck was that? That was not from this world. As quickly as the ship had arrived, it was gone. Forever.

Ryan sat back, running his hands through his hair in frustration. The chair gave a long squeak as though it was going to give out under him. It probably would if he tempted the springs. He wasn’t a little guy. At six-five, he was huge compared to most men. It didn’t help that he liked to hit the gym three times a week. He ate healthily and put on muscle in a way that most men couldn’t but that’s where things ended for him. Most men couldn’t get past his geek glasses to see the man beneath. He was starting to think he wasn’t a good looking guy. Ryan stared at the white bag holding his lunch. Rice, beans, veggies, and flat bread waited for him. He couldn’t bring himself to eat.

The sound of a Jeep starting up signaled the last of the investigators were leaving for the day. Just to be sure, Ryan glanced out the window in time to see them drive down the hill. They’d been there for the past week and found nothing but they would be back in the morning to search. Ryan had accepted the position at the research facility out of curiosity. He wanted to know what had happened to the researchers they put in the field. So, as far as he was concerned he was invested five hundred percent. He wanted to know where everyone went.

He paced the office, stopping only to clean his glasses once. Three men from this division had mysteriously disappeared. NASA was trying to keep it all quiet, but they were having trouble. All three men had been caught on video and were wanted for the possible abduction of a high-risk ob-gyn doctor out of Atlanta if he remembered right. They were later seen on video at a local store, buying baby supplies. All four men hadn’t been seen or heard from since. It was like they were ghosts. The FBI was tracking their credit cards—nothing. There was no activity since that night.

The hair on the back of Ryan’s neck stood on end. He frowned and looked over his shoulder. He felt as though someone was watching him. He shook off the paranoia as he went to the door, locking it. He went to the window, and looked out at the forest surrounding the research center. The sun had mysteriously winked out from what looked like storm clouds. It felt like the night was closing in around him. He had planned on sleeping at the research facility, but now he wasn’t so sure if that was such a good idea. It suddenly didn’t feel so safe.

Ryan turned away from the window, before going over to the logs from the last few months. It looked as though the group had made contact with something out there. Something obviously dangerous. Something that had taken them. It was clear that protocol hadn’t been followed. They hadn’t called in the hit or verified it. Worry had Ryan rubbing the back of his neck. What was he going to do? Should he notify NASA? Probably.

His report was untouched. He couldn’t bring himself to write it just yet. He wanted to know what the hell had happened here. A loud piercing noise outside startled Ryan. He looked toward the windows he had stared out a moment before. His heart hammered. He froze unable to move as he saw a huge shadowy figure coming through the forest. He was walking toward the facility as though he were looking for something. Light breaking through the clouds hit the person’s face. This was no man. It was alien. There were gold symbols on his metallic blue flight suit. His face was cut hard with wide eyes and high cheek bones. A second alien slipped from the trees as though he were hunting humans.

Ryan stood up, shoving the chair out from under him with a bang. Panic moved through him. He had to hide or get the hell out of there. He grabbed his backpack and went out the back door, racing for the cover of trees before he could be caught. His heart was hammering in his ears as the aliens came around the building just as he disappeared into the line of trees. Fuck. He had been seen. The alien raced after him. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Ryan’s feet slipped in the mud as he sprinted through the trees, pushing them out of the way as he slapped at them with his arms. His lungs were burning. His legs pumped with adrenaline. He was running for his life. He glanced over his shoulder. The aliens were tracking him without breaking a sweat. Something told Ryan that these aliens did this for a living.

They were going to hunt him down
