    Chapter One

NASA Field Office – Puerto Rico

    Present Day

This was the biggest cluster fuck Dr. Fallon Regan ever stepped into. He should have come sooner but his illness had gotten in the way—life had gotten in the way. It was getting in the way all the time nowadays. What the fuck am I doing here now?

His doctor had warned him he shouldn’t fly, but he did anyway. He wasn’t a full-time NASA specialist anymore since he took time off for his illness. Frankly, he wasn’t a field grunt any longer. Nowadays, all he did was push paper around at academic level and encourage the new generation to stay curious and change the world.

When had I gotten so disillusioned about my life and the world?

Fallon ran his hand through his hair as he leaned heavily on the cane that helped him with his balance. He should have been home, dealing with all the crap that came with being in charge of the AL program—not that there seemed to be any advanced life out there that wanted anything to do with them. Days and days went by where all he did was read pages of data that gave him a big fat nothing. Where are you Cooper?

Fallon stood in the middle of NASA’s satellite research facility, wondering if his friend had gone off and committed suicide. He should have gone by his cabin first, but Fallon didn’t have the heart. He didn’t want to do a welfare check and find his body. A shiver raced through his blood at the thought of losing his friend.

The two interns from Berkley, Kevin and Jaxon, were now full-time employees at NASA. They had both graduated over the summer, and Cooper’s sudden disappearance had promoted them fast. They needed someone out here to pretend to be in charge for a little while.

Dude, we are not having this conversation about needing an armed security guard out here. Cooper was not kidnapped.

Kevin scoffed. Okay, but when this shit gets real, you better be ready to take a bullet for me.

Trust me. I will, Jaxon said.

The fight was on again, and Fallon was tired of hearing it. Let’s focus here, guys. You don’t need armed security out here. Just keep the gate locked. They looked afraid and uncertain by his suggestion. Let’s start at the beginning, okay? How long has Cooper been missing?

Several months. Almost three I think. We filed a report and an officer came to investigate, but he hasn’t been found, Jaxon said.

I don’t think they really bothered looking for him. They took a report but there was no real investigation out here, Kevin added.

You’re the first from NASA to really look into it, Jaxon said.

Despite being on NASA’s payroll full-time, Cooper was considered a contract employee. That gave NASA the ability to cut ties fast if things got real. He was expendable, and anything that had to do with a satellite field office would have little to do with them. NASA was playing hands-off with this. That wouldn’t be good for any of them if this shit did get real. Unless it reached the mainstream media, nobody would know about what happened out here—ever.

Fallon looked at the guys. Okay. Let’s just keep calm here. You two have been fine, right?

Yeah. No problems at all. Kevin nodded.

Good. If it was someone who meant you harm, they would have come for you guys by now. You haven’t seen anything unusual?

I don’t know. I don’t remember seeing anything or anyone out here. Jaxon paced through the office, going to the window to look at the jungle pressing in on all sides. I have a really bad feeling about all of this.

You always have a bad feeling. You see a bad online news report and you have a bad feeling, Kevin said.

This is different and you know it. Jaxon pointed at Fallon. He knows it. Why else would he be here? Jaxon asked.

I hear you, man, but I don’t think anything sinister happened here, Kevin said.

Cooper wouldn’t have left work willingly. He would have died at his desk. And you know it, Jaxon said.

Out of habit and quiet desperation, Fallon double-checked to make sure his pills were in his pocket. He didn’t like to carry the entire bottle—just enough to get by. He couldn’t miss his medication. Ever. Or, he was fucked—almost dead if he didn’t take his pills. The bottle was in his luggage in the rental. Not only did he have ALS, a progressive motor neuron disease; he had a bad fucking heart that could go at any time thanks to a genetic disorder. After a reassuring pass of his hand over the small box in his pocket, Fallon looked down at Cooper’s work area.

Cooper’s desk was a mess. It was so like him. Jaxon was right. Cooper would have gladly died at his desk than any other place in the world. He lived and breathed for the job. The man was notorious for his inability to keep things organized in grad school.

Careful not to disturb the organized chaos, Fallon sat down and fired up his computer. What was he working on when you last saw him?

He didn’t say, but he worked late that night, Jaxon said.

Have you had any unusual hits to the satellite?

Just one, the day he went missing, Kevin said.

Fallon narrowed his gaze on the pair. What kind of hit?

Just an encryption. We most likely got hacked. I don’t think it’s for real, Jaxon said.

    Let me see it.

Here you go. Good luck with it. Like I said, I think it’s just some bullshit. I’m sure Cooper thought we were the ones who pulled the stunt, Kevin said.

We’re not capable of writing an encryption that complex, Jaxon said. We’re really not that smart.

    Speak for yourself, Kevin said.

With the encryption in hand, Fallon sat back down at Cooper’s desk. The former interns paced around the room as Fallon worked his hands over the keyboard. No fucking way.

    What? Jaxon asked.

He got two encryptions. The last one said they wanted to meet.

    Where? Kevin asked.

He read through the paperwork but the answer he needed wasn’t there. This wasn’t getting him anywhere. No idea. Cooper must have given them the location.

Who the fuck are these people? This is obviously a hoax, Jaxon said.

An exasperated sigh escaped Fallon’s lips as he sat back. They may have Cooper.

You know he’s dying, don’t you? Kevin asked.

Fear raced through Fallon. He looked up from the papers in his hand and his heart sunk. What do you mean he’s dying?

He’s got cancer. He doesn’t have much time left.

Cancer? Why didn’t Cooper tell him? Despite the news about his friend, Fallon’s own mortality came to mind. How do you know?

His oncologist called here. They were desperate to talk to him about some experimental treatment that has had positive results, Jaxon said.

Did he ever call them? Perhaps he returned to the States, Fallon said.

Nope. He didn’t want anything to do with them, Kevin said.

Fallon reached for the message from the doctor, and looked down at the number. How can you be so sure?

I found the message crumpled up in the trash. I picked it out just in case he ever changed his mind, Kevin said.

Unsure of how he was going to handle this, Fallon took the message. He knew the doctor wouldn’t be able to give out any information, even if he called. I’ll try to follow up with this. Maybe he flew back to the States.

Jaxon sighed, sitting down in his office chair. There hasn’t been any movement on his passport. We called the embassy.

    He’s just gone, Kevin said.

Yes, he had gone, but that didn’t stop Fallon from wanting to know what happened to his friend. There was a chance he went to meet someone for a date and it didn’t end well. Although that just didn’t sound like his friend. Of course, they drifted apart over the years. Fallon had no idea Cooper was dying of cancer. They were supposed to be best friends, but he had stopped returning his calls about a year ago.

It was probably about the same time he had gotten his diagnosis. Why had he gone off by himself to deal with this? And why the hell had he not told him he was dying? It was both of their faults for not keeping in touch. Still, if he were dying, he would have called. That thought had Fallon’s hand moving over the box of pills in his pocket. How many times had he come close to dying over the last few months? Too many to count. And the number of times he’d considered calling Cooper—hundreds. The number of times he had—zero.

Fallon ran a hand through his hair. His heart medications gave him headaches. He should take it again, but he didn’t want the migraine that would come along. He’d let it go for a few hours. Just a few. It wouldn’t kill him.

Drumming his fingers on Cooper’s desk, Fallon stared at Jaxon. He broke protocol by not reporting the encryptions. Did either of you report the hit?

Kevin crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. No.

We figured it was all bullshit. I honestly thought we got hacked, Jaxon said.

Frustration zipped through Fallon. It may be, but you still need to follow the protocol. It keeps everyone safe.

    Got it, Jaxon said.

Kevin shook his head. I can’t believe he really went off on his own. Dude has a death wish.

He was dying. Maybe he didn’t give a fuck anymore, Jaxon said.

The sound of a drawer scraping open pulled Fallon from his thoughts. A flash of silver caught his eyes. What’s that?

"The keys to Cooper’s cabin. We went to check it out. There wasn’t a thing out of place. Nothing. It was like he just
