    Word from the Author

Throughout the 30 years I’ve been practicing medicine, patients continually asked me why I hadn’t written a medical book and then tell me that I needed to do so. Within that time, an enormous number of patients have walked through the doors of my practice. In the last 10 years, 10,000 of these patients have had symptomatic patterns that have occurred repeatedly. These patterns also repeat themselves throughout a common set of diseases.

I often work with people who are ignored by the medical community, and who don’t fit into the normal patterns of disease. Commonly prescribed drugs don’t work for them, and they often get sicker and sicker without knowing why. Rather than throw up my hands, I’ve chosen to view this situation as an invitation to investigate underlying causes. That’s what functional medicine is all about. Why are so many people getting sick? Why can’t they get better, even with prescribed drugs?

Most importantly, what can we do to help them thrive?

The best healing happens when doctor and patient work together. I have my job to do in asking the right questions and using my training, experience, and research to diagnose and treat the condition. Patients have their job also. They need to follow instructions, listen to their bodies, learn how to communicate with me as they respond to treatments in their own unique way, and then adjust their lifestyle to become healthier as well.

This is not easy for a person who is struggling with pain, memory loss, fatigue, and often times debilitating symptoms. This is why I’m writing this guide. People need help, and a step-by-step approach to understanding their condition to lessen the work that comes with healing, and a simpler way to communicate with their own physician.

    So, here
