    ACT ONE

    SCENE ONE

From within, the hoots of an owl is heard, an indication of evil and abomination in the land. Mrs. Evelyn is seen seated on a couch in her sitting room gripped with fear and deep in thoughts concerning the nightmare she had the previous night.

MRS. EVELYN: (Cleaning her teeth with the help of a chewing stick and soliloquizing) I can’t place my hands on the reason why I keep on having this particular dream. My only fear is that most of my dreams usually come true. (Sighs) God forbid that this one comes to past...tufiakwa! This bird of misfortune whose evil cry bring alongside with it death and sorrow, why must you hoot this morning in my compound? Please stop hooting, stop! But come to think of it, this seems to be the same nightmare I had three years ago before my husband died. Could this dream have anything to do with the sudden change of character in Emma, my son? Indeed I am filled with fear and I can’t keep this to myself all alone because a snake seen by one person usually turns into a python. (She calls for Uchechukwu her house help) Uchechukwu! Uchechukwu!! Uchechukwu!!! (There is no response so she calls out with a louder voice) Uchechukwu Uzuakoli !!!

UCHECHUKWU: (Answers and rushes in) Yes! Madam I dey come.

MRS. EVELYN: (Speaking in an upset manner) You accursed child, I know you will wait for me to scream out my senses before you come running to answer me. Stupid boy! Come on, will you take your corpse out of here and go and call me my husband’s brother, Anyanwu, before Amadioha, the god of thunder descends his wrath upon you. (Uchechukwu rushes out to accomplish his mission then she kneels down and begins to talk to herself again) I am scared. Our ancestors, our gods, please protect us, your offsprings, from the evil eyes of our enemies in this wicked world. Please come to our rescue. Amen. (A knock is heard on the door she sits down and adjusts herself) Who is that? Please come in the door is wide open. (Anyanwu comes in).

ANYANWU: (Looking uneasy and slightly frightened) Evelyn, is everything alright? This one you sent for me this early morning, I hope all is well or have the goats escaped from their ropes? Has heaven descended upon earth?

MRS. EVELYN: Please sit down Nna Anyi. (Anyanwu sits opposite her) You know that a frog does not run around in broad daylight for fun. It is either it is running away from something or it is chasing something. Please sit down and make
