Chapter One - Tarel of Taxos

Tarel, daughter of Kantel of Taxos, walked the wide corridors of the Taxos Health facility, with a long-legged stride. She was almost six foot tall with bright red hair firmly plaited around her head and a slim, athletic body. She drew admiring glances from the women and men she passed.

Her silver suit and red epaulets showed that she was a space pilot in the United Space program and that she commanded not only a space ship, but also the respect of the local Taxos citizens.

Her silver eyes glowed and she nodded to the occasional passerby that she knew, but her mind was primarily on the message that the Head of the Medical Centre had sent her, just that morning. It had simply read ‘Report to Administrator Fel at the Central Medical Centre, at 10 am today, for a new assignment.’

She had been in the middle of servicing her space carrier Mothercraft 3 and covered in grease and other obnoxious fluids, she had to quickly wash and get into her formal uniform and make her way quickly, to the administrator’s office in the tall, crystalline building.

Taxos was a planet primarily controlled by women, who made up 80% of its population. They lived in large, park-like cities spread across the orange-skied planet. The women were the instigators, promoters, politicians and financial leaders of their culture, while the quieter men were usually happy to take on the roles of artists, musicians and carers of the children of the Taxos women.

This gender division of roles had existed for several millennia and both sexes, generally thought that it was an ideal arrangement. Tarel like many Taxos women had never really thought about the arrangement or whether it was fair to men or not.
