Chapter One

Jarl

Hurry, little brother or we will all leave you behind! laughed the large, blonde man hanging from the pock-marked cliff.

Jarl snorted and grasped for his rough hand. The young men of his village were taking part, in the yearly harvest celebrations and he was competing in an endurance race.

He had competed in archery and spear throwing coming second to his older brother, Manee and then he had surfed the waves and came third to his second eldest brother, Hale and now his slightly older brother, Waran was beating him in the climbing competition. Jarl was not having a good day!

As he snatched Waran’s large hand, his brother laughed and pulled it back, at the last moment.

Sorry kid, I’m gonna’ win this one! he said in a determined voice and gave his little brother a gentle push.

Jarl found himself plummeting down to the sea below and with a loud splash; he crashed beneath the blue waters. He came up spluttering and very indignant. That his own brother would treat him so disrespectfully! His handsome, tanned face grew an angry red.

To make it worse, the entire village was watching and while some laughed hilariously, others cat-called to him what they thought, were amusing insults. Even beautiful Marlee, who had often shown a romantic interest in him, was laughing and clutching her belly with one hand, while she pointed derisively at him with the other!

At the end of the contest, he was awarded fourth place behind his three older brothers. His large, jovial father smacked them all on the chest and announced that his four sons were the best warriors in the village! Everyone laughed and cheered. But Jarl was not happy.

At six foot three inches, he was still considered the runt of the litter and his three strong brothers towered over him. He was tall and well shaped, while they were twice his width and loved playing jokes on their weaker brother. Jarl could easily beat them in school subjects of reading, writing and arithmetic, but these were not talents prized, in his home or village.
