Chapter One - Cassie

Cassiopeia Jones (Cassie to her friends) sat on the beach with her friends watching the sun set over the dark, green sea. The sky was streaked with orange, pink and gold lights and the air was warm and smelled of ozone.

They had built a small fire with driftwood and lounged around it drinking wine from a foil cask and sharing take-away food, pizzas and hamburgers from a nearby beach store. Loud music played from a boom box and the mood was joyful, young and excited.

Cassie’s roommate Britney, a tall, blonde girl with a long ponytail, gave a loud squeal, pulled her boyfriend Danny to his feet and they began to dance to the loud beat of the reggae music. Others joined in and Cassie watched the three couples laughing and enjoying the dancing.

She felt a familiar stab of loneliness that she had no particular male friend to share this fun outing with her. She had broken-up with her college sweetheart, Rob when she had left her hometown, to seek her success in the city. They had agreed to the mutual breakup and still remained good friends. Rob had never understood her need, to find success with her artistic skills.

You can draw and paint here in Grenville. Why do you have to go and work in the city? he asked her in a confused and hurt voice.

But somehow, Cassie couldn’t explain her deep need to test her artistic skills against other artists’ efforts and she didn’t want to settle down, marry Rob and live an everyday suburban life, like so many of her classmates. She felt too young, to commit to such a dull life!

Surely, there must be something more to life! she asked herself. And so, she had applied for a job with an advertising company, sailed through the interview and then moved to a small, city beach apartment, which she shared with the exuberant, Britney.
