Sirius

Sirius is the brightest star in the heavens, visible to humans. It is actually a binary system consisting of two suns, Sirius A and Sirius B, but seen by the naked eye as one large glowing star. It is known affectionately as the Dog Star, as it is located in the constellation Canis Major. Sirius is located 8.7 light years from Earth. It has figured largely in the ancient religions, particularly in Africa and Egypt. The Greeks named it the ‘scorcher’. Its rising over Egypt heralded the flooding of the Nile and the ancient Polynesians used it for navigation in the Southern oceans.
