Chapter One: The 1940’s Cell Phone

Look at the photograph above; do you see an anomaly with it or is it just a happy group of sun worshippers enjoying a rare sunny English day at the seaside?

This photograph was lost in archives for decades and when later examined, it astonished the researchers by appearing to show a man in the 1940’s, during the Second World War using a modern cell/mobile phone!

The location was later identified, as Towan Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, England in 1943. No-one has ever identified the mysterious man in his crumpled brown suit, nor the ‘out of time’ object he is so focussed upon. Any ideas?

Our Story

Les Kuyper hurried towards the beach; he needed to get away from his depressing life and bask in the sun for a few hours. Life was not going well for him!

He had been rejected by the armed forces due to his chronic asthma, much to his humiliating mixture of shame and relief.

Then he had got a job in a large department store, where he had the inglorious position of selling household goods to angry housewives, who at least a dozen times a day, asked him suspiciously Why he hadn’t joined up? and Why these sheets were of such low quality? as if he was personally responsible for there bad quality. Didn’t they know that there was a war on?

And then today, on top of all that, he had been called into see Mister Caruthers, the head of the department and summarily dismissed.

We’ve had complaints ... Banson and Sons don’t like slackers! he added ponderously.

But I work hard ... he protested.

"It’s not just that Kuyper, with your German-sounding name and looking so fit and all, these women come complaining to me that, well, you might be a ‘conchie’ or even worse a German spy! You have to go!"
