    Dedication

Dedicated to all young and old ex-Atlanteans everywhere!

Chapter One: Excitement At The Temple

The small party of brightly dressed people walked slowly down the long, flag stone esplanade towards the Central Temple of Poseidon. A slim, pretty, dark-haired girl of thirteen with wide green eyes, walked hesitantly and nervously in the centre of the family group who had arranged themselves protectively around her.

Leda, who was trembling with apprehension, held the firm hand of her mother, Menalda, a tiny, dark-skinned woman with high swept, black hair. Her mother spoke to her encouragingly, Don’t be frightened Leda. Remember, my daughter that you can always change your mind and come home, anytime you want. The priestesses have assured me of that! She shook her head dramatically with emphasis and her dark eyes flashed.

You just tell them, if you’re unhappy and your father will come and get you straight away! This I promise!

Leda smiled at her mother with effort.

I shall be fine Mother, don’t fuss!

She absently straightened the fall of her snow-white toga. Today, she wore no ornamentation. None of her usual silver rings, enamelled earrings or bracelets of gold. Only the plain, white cotton shift and her most unadorned leather sandals. Her modest collection of jewellery lay safely at home, in a small gilded box in her bedroom. She would have no use for them, until she returned home for her yearly holidays, in the spring.

Leda’s large framed father, Tenaus patted her protectively on her slim, straight back. He was suitably dressed in his best dark blue toga with a large, gold clasp pin in the shape of a fire-breathing serpent.

Leda will be fine, Mother. It is an honour that she has been chosen as an Initiate. We should all be proud of her! But if you don’t like it, Little One, let me know and I shall take you from the Temple, priests or no priests!

Leda turned and hugged him quickly. I shall remember, Father. His dark, curly beard tickled her chin.

A small girl brightly dressed in an orange shift and blue cape, pulled urgently at Leda’s left hand.

Leda, Leda, you will be coming home soon, for holidays, won’t you? You’re not going away from us, forever? Her thin voice trembled and tears came readily into her large, brown eyes.

Leda knelt in front of her small sister and held her closely with her slim, honey coloured arms.

Don’t cry Kell, I shall be home in the spring for a good long holiday with you all. You must be the big sister now and look after Father and Mother and Chenna.

Kell buried her teary face in Leda’s thin chest.

I wish you hadn’t been chosen to go to the temple, Leda. It’s not fair!

Chenna, a tall, lanky boy of eleven, stamped his feet at Kell. Silly baby! He said dismissively. Don’t you realise what an honour it is for the family that Leda has been chosen to become an Initiate? You’re shaming us all! When I am thirteen, I hope to be chosen to become one too!

Kell lifted her tear stained face from Leda’s chest.

I don’t care if you go away, Chenna. You’re mean! I wouldn’t miss you!

Chenna scowled and the family laughed at his outraged expression, relieving the tension that they were all feeling.

The loud resonant sound of a temple gong rang out over the crowded esplanade and people began to hurry towards the temple. It was the ninth hour and devotions were about to begin.

Come, come, we don’t want Leda to be late on her first day! exclaimed her mother with an anxious look on her kindly face.

The family group began to quicken their steps and hurried towards a huge red and black stoned building capped with a large, dazzling, white dome that lay at the far end of the paved walkway. The Central Temple was a magnificent building that could hold several thousand people. A thirty-foot high, golden trident representing the Sea God, Poseidon, towered above the heavy central doors made of red cedar.

Red and black pillars of rare volcanic marble-like stone stood imposingly at each corner of the building and the large forecourt. They were ornately capped with a rare combination of metals, gold, silver and copper known as orichalcum. The bright, morning sun reflected off the precious metal, giving the already imposing building, an ethereal glow.

For a few seconds, the small family group stood gazing spellbound at the almost supernatural sight of the glowing building. Then one by one, they hugged and kissed Leda goodbye. Menalda burst into tears and Tenaus and Chenna shuffled their feet distractedly. They would have much preferred to be back home on their vineyard estate, half a day’s journey to the north or two stades away in distance, then to be making their emotional farewells to Leda, in the city capital of Medea.

Kell sobbed into Leda’s saddened face.

    Don’t forget me Leda!

Leda nodded mutely and began to walk alone towards the huge cedar doors. She stopped, turned and waved sadly at her grieving family. As she did so, she noticed that several by-standers were smiling amusedly at the small family group. One tall, red-haired girl of her own age, laughed aloud.

I feel such a fool! she thought angrily. Her pretty face flushed with shame at her family’s behaviour. The tall temple doors opened silently to her touch. Then she turned for one last look at their sad faces, as she entered the imposing vestibule and felt immediately ashamed.

Bye, I love you all! she mouthed at them with a trembling smile. They all waved frantically back, then watched her slowly enter the doorway and disappear from their view.

Ah, said Tenaus with a sad shake of his large, dark, curly head. She has made us proud, today!

He glanced patriotically at the glimmering building and the fine clothed citizens of the city. His heart swelled within his strong chest.

Today, we can all be proud that we live in such a wonderful, rich nation and that we are all loyal Atlanteans!

    Chapter Two: Meeting New Friends

Leda stood patiently, regarding the throng of milling figures before her. Many were devout worshippers who were making their way to the central meditation chamber, but other young boys and girls like herself, stood awkwardly to one side of the large marble vestibule, undecided as to where to go. Several priestesses dressed in rainbow coloured robes, approached the young people and shepherded them silently into a large chamber to one side.

A kindly faced elderly priestess asked Leda her name and efficiently checked it against a parchment list that she held in her wrinkled hands.

The Grand High Priestess will be addressing you all, soon. She said with a smile. Then you can find your dormitory and get settled. Yours will be the Dolphin dormitory, Leda. Can you remember that? All our residence rooms are named after marine life.

Leda nodded, shyly smiled her thanks to the friendly priestess and moved to one side and stood against a white marbled wall. She saw several boys and girls that she vaguely knew that were children of traders and farmers in her local area. None of her close friends had wanted to be considered as a new Initiate, at the Central Temple.

Even her best friend Kyna had informed her with very little tact, I wouldn’t want to spend seven summers learning priestess things. What a waste of time! No parties, no pretty jewellery and no handsome suitors!

Leda had smiled at her friend’s openness and forgave her for her off-hand comments, for she knew that Kyna was kind at heart. She realised that Kyna had no great love for ancient knowledge and that her study lessons in the small village school, generally bored her. She was a typical Atlantean girl of thirteen who saw her future, as inevitably one of courtship, marriage and family life.

Well, I want to learn everything I can explained Leda. There is plenty of time in the future for boys and marriage. Wouldn’t you like to know the mysteries that only the High Priests know? Her wide green eyes gleamed at the thought.

But Kyna had shaken her dark locks with a frown.

You’re odd, Leda! Not like a girl at all. She said with a puzzled smile.

But, let’s forget about you going into the City Temple College and just enjoy the day. My father has bought me a new baby ocelot. He’s really cute, let’s go and play with him!

Then the two young girls had spent the morning in play with the cuddly feline and tactfully dismissed each other’s reservations about Leda’s future vocation.

Perhaps, I am odd! thought Leda to herself, recalling Kyna’s unthinking remark. But if I am, then so are all these other boys and girls!

She observed the crowd of white toga-clad strangers before her, with shy interest for they would be her colleagues for many years to come. She wondered if some would become good friends. The future suddenly seemed very exciting.

Abruptly, there was a mild commotion to one side of the large chamber, as a door opened and a tall stately figure dressed in purple and gold robes entered the room and made her way majestically to the centre of the room. The elderly Grand High Priestess, Winnow, was attended by four young priestesses dressed in rainbow-coloured shifts.

Welcome to the temple, young Initiates. Her clear voice rang out with authority. This is an important day in your life. Perhaps, the most important, so far. You will spend seven summers with us learning The Mysteries, developing your healing powers and understanding your own natures better. Some of you may decide to do your Higher Priest and Priestess training with us here, for a further five summers. Some of you may decide that you want to leave our Temple Seminary earlier, as you miss the secular life. You all have the right to do so, at anytime. We do not want unwilling initiates with us! Winnow, grey-haired and regal watched the young Initiates with warm, friendly, brown eyes.

Your teachers are wise and committed High Priests and Priestesses who have your best interests at heart. Do not be afraid to approach them with your problems and concerns. I shall hopefully, get to know you all over the next seven summers and assess your abilities. Approach your studies with an open mind and heart and all shall be well! She smiled warmly at the silent group of young men and women, lifted her right hand in blessing and with her maid attendants left the room as swiftly as when she had entered.

The far doors were now opened and the remaining priestesses instructed the young people as to how to find their particular dormitories. As they left the chamber, each was handed a parcel containing new shifts, linen and toiletries. Those few students, who had entered the chamber wearing jewellery, were instructed to remove the ornate pieces and hand them to the priestesses for storage. The rule of the Initiate College was well known, You come to us unadorned, with only your healthy body and willing mind, we shall grant and teach you all, in the path of Spirit!

Leda slowly walked along the winding corridors searching for a room with a dolphin sign. Each doorway she passed was decorated with a tile painted with a marine motif, such as a sea horse, sea creature or a shell. At last she found the room with a cheery dolphin design on the door. She tapped gently on the wooden door and entered the large, airy room.

Sunlight streamed into the yellow painted room through large glass windows. Six beds with different brightly coloured covers lay in a row, each with it’s own small chest for belongings and a bedside table. A tiny, white tiled bathroom stood at the end of the dormitory.

Five girls stood regarding her shyly. One she noted with regret, was the tall, red-haired girl who had laughed at her family’s emotional display outside the temple. Two of the girls were twins with short, curly, dark brown hair and large dark eyes. One of them stepped forward with a shy smile.

I’m Delia and this is my sister Petra.

The other twin nodded in a friendly way to Leda.

This is Maran, she indicated a short, plump girl with a big smile and kind brown eyes, And Kadral, a tall, thin girl smiled at her with a serious expression. And this is Tannit. She’s from Poseida.

The tall, red haired girl nodded abruptly at her from the farthest bed, where she was now sprawling indolently.

Really, are you from Poseida? asked Leda with avid interest, her earlier animosity towards the girl forgotten. She greatly desired to visit that distant, exotic sister island. It was said that the people of Poseida were great sailors and explorers and often came into contact with the people of other lands.

The red-haired girl nodded her head again.

Yes, Poseida is far more cultured than Medea, from what I’ve seen so far. My father is the Harbour Master there, a very important man. Our Central Temple is far bigger and grander than this one, but it doesn’t have a seminary attached. Therefore, I’m stuck here for seven summers to do my training. Who are you by the way? She arrogantly inspected Leda from head to toe.

Leda smiled at the five girls and introduced herself.

I am Leda and my family owns a vineyard at Creocha about two stades from here. My family has lived there for many centuries. My father, Tenaus is a distant cousin of the King. I am so pleased to finally be here. I was so worried that I would not pass the tests. Isn’t the Temple magnificent and the college huge? Isn’t it all so wonderful!

The five girls inspired by her enthusiasm, all agreed noisily that it was indeed fine to be here at the Central Temple dormitory and they were eager to begin their Initiate training. They were still chatting noisily and getting to know one another better, when an elderly priestess came to tell them to get ready for their evening meal by washing their hands and faces and changing into their new white robes with the red tasselled fringe. The six eager girls hurried to do her bidding.

    Chapter Three: Admiring The Prince

The noise of the huge dining room was overwhelming, as the six girls shyly entered the room. It was a vast cavernous room surrounded on one side by large glass-paned windows that captured the rose coloured sunset. Hundreds of candles illuminated the walls and tables with a golden light.

Over one thousand students ranging from the ages of thirteen to twenty-five were busy talking loudly and noisily dining around the food-laden tables. At the far end of the room, a long, snowy linen clad table, piled high with breads, wine and fruit, provided sustenance for the teaching staff of fifty priests and priestesses.

A young priestess showed the small group of apprehensive girls to their table, where thirty or so students were already seated. They were all first year initiates and were wearing white togas with red fringes. Several smiled with welcome at the girls and moved aside, so that they could sit together on the long wooden benches. Leda realised that she was suddenly very hungry and began to relax and enjoy the fine-grained breads, fruits and savoury treats.

When she had eaten her fill and was sipping slowly on a mango fruit juice served in a fine golden goblet, Leda began to observe more closely her fellow students for the next year. There were equal numbers of boys and girls. Some exuded the confidence of the city dweller, while others had an almost rural aura around them and were shyer in the cosmopolitan gathering. Tannit the red-haired roommate chatted confidently with a tall, dark haired boy who exuded a sophisticated confidence despite his youthful years.

He has a nice, interesting face. Leda thought to herself.

As if reading her thoughts, plump, cheerful Maran beside her, dug her gently in the ribs.

I see our superior Poseidon maiden has already captured the heart of the Prince. I wonder if Andron knows what a sharp tongue she has?

Leda looked at the young man with new interest. If he was a Prince, he was probably some distant relation of her father’s. Prince Andron, she recalled from her mother’s social gossip, was the younger of King Menalaus’ two sons. Although not the heir to the throne, he was never the less a very important person in the kingdom. She wondered if she would like him, when she got to know him better and if he would like her.

Ah, well, Leda stifled a large yawn. The warm, stuffy hall and her full stomach were making her feel tired and she thought longingly of her soft bed.

The Prince will have seven summers to get to know us all!

The young initiates dressed in simple, white, linen smocks edged with red, were led into the first of the crystal healing halls, by several purple velvet robed priests and priestesses. They were immediately bathed in a rosy-red light and as one, lifted their faces upward towards the dazzling, red ceiling. The roof of the healing hall was constructed of thousands of red gemstones, rubies, garnets and other crimson, precious stones. The sunlight cascaded through the semi opaque ceiling and bathed everyone below, in it’s carmine glow. They immediately felt stimulated and full of vigour.

One of the beautiful priestesses smiled warmly and explained to them in a clear, ringing voice, This is the Hall of Life Energy. The red colour that flows there affects your Base or Kundalini chakra. Bathe in it’s ruby light and feel energized ..."

Leda allowed the red light to bathe her small, slim body. She could feel the red warmth entering into her crown chakra at the top of her head and then flowing through her body. Her class had been taught earlier in the week, about the energy centres in the human body called chakras and of the crown chakra and how it connected them to higher unseen forces. It was sensitive to light and astral energies.

She had been amazed when pairing off with a chosen partner, to feel the strange, warm and tingling force enveloping her fingers, as it emanated from her classmate’s crown. Her classmate, a small pudgy girl named Chiva, became excited as she felt Leda’s crown energy.

I can really feel it! It’s quite strong! she exclaimed, jumping up and down in her excitement.

The large class of first year initiates had eagerly learnt about the base or life giving chakra, which the Eastern mystics called the Kundalini chakra. It was situated at the base of the torso. This caused mild amusement to the students as they tried to feel their partner’s life energy chakra there, without actually touching each other’s ‘private parts’. As a healer, Leda knew that she would have to learn to examine both male and female naked bodies in the future, without nervousness or embarrassment, but at that particular moment, Leda was very glad that she was paired with only fellow female classmates for these introductory exercises.

The tall, stately lecturer, a priest dressed in splendid black and purple robes had explained to them that, "In most young people, such as yourselves, the life force and energy emitted from the base chakra is usually strong and very warm. It is seen psychically, as a bright, red light flowing out from the round spinning chakra. However, in a weak, old or very ill person, the red light wanes to a pale anaemic grey/pink. As healers, you
