    Chapter One - Jack, 1968.

    Jack stretched his arms wide, as he stepped outside the beach house and basked in the morning sunlight. The golden sands and azure blue water called to him and he shook off the last remains of his sleep and ran quickly down the short path to the beach and dove into the cool water.

    The shock of the cold water stunned his body for a moment and then, as he adjusted to the sea’s temperature, he felt warmth coming into his healthy, strong body. Only his shoulder, stiff with the wound of a muscle, hit by a stray Viet Cong bullet, gave him any discomfort. Just returned from a stint in Vietnam as an unwilling conscript and invalided out with his injured shoulder, Jack wanted nothing more than to forget the whole unhappy two years spent there and return to his former life.

    He had seen too much pain and suffering in the last few years and only wanted a little peace and quiet and a chance to return to his paintings and sculpture work. But somehow, even though he had armed himself with new water-colour paints and canvasses, nothing he drew or painted seemed to come alive; he seemed to have lost his inspiration and his art was suffering for it. His old agent, Sammy Wong had advised him ‘to just take it easy for a few weeks and enjoy his parent’s beach house and maybe the inspiration would come back’.

    Jack was just making a good name for himself in the art world with his romantic water-colour paintings and imaginative marble figurines when he had been so brutally conscripted into the army and sent to Vietnam. It seemed to him that the Asian war had left him wounded in the mind and spirit, as well as the body!

    Jack swam towards and outcrop of rocks some distance from the shore. He was building up his shoulder muscles and trying to regain his former strength. He had always loved swimming in the ocean and felt happiest splashing in the briny water or body surfing into the shore.
