Chapter One

Ethan

Ethan Millar sat in the car and worried his fingernails with his sharp teeth. He hated starting a new school and meeting new people. It was even worse now that his family had moved to England. He had at least had something in common with other teenagers, in Texas and New Mexico, but what would they think of an American boy here, in the wilds of Salisbury?

His mother Carrie Millar smiled affectionately at her fifteen-year-old son. She guessed what he was thinking and her sympathies were with him. Being the son of an U.S. Air Force captain and moving from base to base was not an easy life, especially during the teenage years.

She touched his arm and smiled encouragingly. It won’t be so bad, Ethan. These British boys and girls won’t be so different to your friends in Dallas.

Ethan scowled and his brown eyes darkened. Yeh, Mom, but its still kind’a scary and what is it with this weird name for a school? John Magic Dee High School, now that’s pretty strange!

I guess the school is named after someone famous in the local area, maybe a sportsman or something like that. It will be interesting for you to find out who it is called after. I heard a neighbor call it ‘Magic High’; now that’s a fascinating, Ethan!

She smiled at him and her blonde hair swung on her shoulders. She was an attractive woman in her late thirties with an American style about her. Ethan had inherited her large brown eyes and dark eyelashes, but his hair was dark brown like his father, Captain Millar. He was a slim, tall boy with a pleasant face and he was dressed in jeans and a vintage Rolling Stones tee shirt.

He scowled again, as his mother dropped him off at the main entrance of the large comprehensive high school building and she bent to kiss him on the cheek.

Not in front of the other kids, Mom! he said horrified and she emitted a hearty laugh.

Have a nice day, Ethan and don’t be afraid. I’m sure English teenagers don’t bite! And as an ‘American’ you’ll be real novelty! she said cheekily, as she drove away.
