PREFACE
This small book is an attempt on my part to teach young Masters of Beagles how to start a pack and how to maintain it. Every young man who hunts with a pack of foxhounds should know something about hounds and something about hunting. I fear the numbers are small in most packs in the Country. A much respected and well-known Master of Foxhounds once said to me, as we went through the gateway leading into the Trinity Beagles Kennels, These hounds have produced more M.F.H.’s than any other pack in the Country.
I am convinced that those followers of foxhounds, who have hunted or whipped-in to a pack of beagles, will get far more fun out of their hunting in the future, than those who only go out to hunt to ride.
I have had the pleasure of following, whipping-in to, and hunting beagles for thirty-five years, and have received an immense amount of enjoyment out of it. My thanks are due to the farmers and landowners, over whose land my little pack have had the privilege of hunting for the last twenty-one years.

FOREWORD
BY MAJOR M. E. BARCLAY, M.F.H.
This book seems to me to supply a long-felt want in the Beagle world, since it very concisely tells the beginner how to start, maintain and hunt a Pack of Beagles.
It is written by one who knows, the author having learnt in that best of all schools,—Experience.
Beagling is a great school for all sorts of hunting, and it would indeed be very interesting to know how many of the present Masters of Foxhounds first started their careers as such, by hunting a Pack of Beagles.
There is one part I would like to emphasize, and that is that with proper care, a certain amount of give and take, and due consideration for one another, the relations between the Master of the Foxhounds and the Master of the Beagles in the same Country can always be of the best.
