Training your puppy can feel like a daunting task when you see just how much energy they have and how many things they don’t know about being the perfect companion for you and for your family. With issues ranging from chewing on all of your favorite things to going potty in the house every time you turn your back, it can be dizzying and a little bit overwhelming. Puppies come into your life, happy and excited to see you, overjoyed by all the new stimuli in their environment, and they have no concept of schedules, routines, proper places for certain tasks and activities, and no sense of boundaries. All of these things will take time to learn and establish and they will need your help in getting there!
Not to worry, though, as training your puppy can be a much more positive experience than you might think! Don’t get overwhelmed just yet because in this book, I will outline many different tips, techniques, routines, and regimens you can use to help your puppy to learn and thrive in less time than you might think! We’ve taken the very best information on the very best methods, put them to the test, and found all of the things that actually work. In some of the chapters, you’ll even have multiple methods to choose from for each habit. We’ve taken every precaution to ensure that only the most relevant information on puppy training has made it into your hands because all of this is confusing enough! We won’t overload you with confusing terms, demands for expensive training equipment, or recommendations for training specialists who cost a small fortune.
By positively training your puppy at home, you’ll be getting them acclimated to this ideal family environment and you’ll be able to properly bond with your dog as they learn and grow. By implementing the routines in this guide, you can ensure that your dog grows into the perfect companion for you and anyone else in your household without disrupting your already hectic life.
By choosing only routines, techniques, tips, and information that has been tested, verified, and proven, this book is sure to give you and your new pet the best possible start for your relationship.
Puppies who sense strong leadership, positive reinforcement, and a direct immersion into their new routine are bound to thrive and grow into the most loyal and ideal companions. This book will take you through all of those things, step by step so you’re never left in the dark on how best to care for your newest family member!
Properly training your pet when they first enter your family is imperative, as it will cut down on the frustrations, disruptions, and growing pains of getting used to that new presence in your home. The longer you wait, the more shoes could be chewed up!
So, get started reading straight away. Your family and your shoes will thank you!
Chapter 1: What Beginners Need to Know
Expectation Management
As with any large endeavor or undertaking in life, it will be important to manage expectations while you’re training your puppy. Managing expectations can help you to see setbacks for what they are and advance accordingly. Let’s talk a little bit about what we mean when we say expectations management.
Progress is not a straight line,
is a phrase with which you may be familiar and it applies to many different areas in life. If you’re trying to—say—manage your finances, there might be some habits that take time to break. You could save 50 dollars from one paycheck, then nothing from the next because some big expense came up that you weren’t expecting. You didn’t contribute anything to your new savings goal in the latest week, but overall, your efforts are stronger and you’re headed in the right direction!
It’s imperative that you see each minor setback as just another step in the process. Accidents are bound to happen, people and pets are bound to have a slip-up here or there, and things can look a little bit hairier than you might expect before they start to get better. The important thing is that you continue to move forward with the things that you know will help, and that you keep to your goals with your new pet.
Your pet, like anyone who is new to life in general, has a lot of learning to do about how things are supposed to work. They have a lot to learn about what they should and shouldn’t do in your home, and they have much to learn about boundaries. It’s your job to remind them of those things when they slip up, so don’t take it too hard when they need reminding!
Managing expectations can mean the difference between seeing something for the setback that it is, and deciding that it’s just not worth it to train your puppy all on your own. In some cases, you might need to call for the help of a professional. In many cases, however, it’s best to train your puppy right at home because that is where all the changes will need to take place and to start.
Common Puppy Training Mistakes
Taking the puppy home or away from its mom and litter too soon.
Your puppy relies on having those eight full weeks with their mother at the beginning of their life. They thrive on the nutrition from their mother’s milk and from being raised in that environment. Allow your puppy to stay with their mother for the entire eight weeks and you will get a much healthier, happier, more well-adjusted puppy than you otherwise would. Keeping a puppy from getting that nutrition and that contact can have lasting effects that could hinder the growth, health, and development of your puppy.
Not training your puppy right at the 8-week mark.
As soon as you get your puppy home, assuming you get your puppy right when they are eight weeks old, you should start training. If they are older than that, find out if there is any training that they have had so you can piggyback onto it or use some of that to your advantage. In some unfortunate cases, the training the puppies have had is not the best, you will need to contend with those learned behaviors, but it is better to know about them than to go into them blindly.
Opting not to crate train.
Not crate training your puppy can make things a lot harder on you, on your family, and on your puppy. Some might think that having
