It is time for readers to put their hand in their pockets. I’ve sent the GWCT £50. I don’t do any fieldsports; my contribution to those activities is domestic; my washing, sewing, butchery and cooking skills and the like for husband and children over some 40 years. Yet even I know the importance of the GWCT. Thank you for bringing the finances of this unique organisation to the fore (News, 27 May).

If every reader sends a tenner that would be a start. Perhaps this summer’s aborted holiday fund or monies not spent on fuel should be passed on to those such as the GWCT, Countryside Alliance and BASC. They all promote treasured countryside activities and counter detrimental
