Guinea Pig Pets - Debbie Noble
Introduction
Guinea pigs make great pets, but they can be somewhat stubborn and difficult to train. With patience and persistence, however, a guinea pig can be trained just like a dog. Guinea pigs are warm-hearted, loyal, and loving, and they have a huge capacity for both giving and receiving affection. Most people do not think of guinea pigs as particularly intelligent creatures, but they actually do have a lot of capacity for learning.
Once you learn how to communicate with a guinea pig, you will find that they are actually very smart and you can develop a strong relationship with them. These tips will help you to teach your guinea pigs some commands, basic behaviors and even fancy tricks.
Why Train Your Guinea Pig
Training a guinea pig gives you the chance to form a strong bond with your pet. It is satisfying and fun to have a pet that understands some commands and that responds to your commands. The training process brings you and your pet closer together, and will strengthen your relationship as owner and pet, making your guinea pig seem more like a man's best friend
than a little animal in a cage
.
If you don't believe that a guinea pig can be trained, stop and think about how yours is behaving. If you have owned a guinea pig for a while, you have probably noticed that it recognizes your voice and the voices of people that live with you, but that it is nervous around strangers. You may also have noticed that when you open the grass bag or treat bag, it rushes to get food. These are all signs that your pet is learning.
Guinea pigs can be trained, and you as a pet owner can learn a lot about your pet too. Each guinea pig has its own mannerisms and body language. You can use this to learn what mood your guinea pig is in, and what it wants. Training is a two way street, and if you take the time to learn what makes your pet happy you will form an even stronger bond with them.
Competitions for Guinea Pigs
Another reason for training guinea pigs is that there are shows where fanciers – people who selectively breed and train their guinea pigs – take their pets to show them off in competition. These shows are called Cavy Shows, and they have several different sections for different types of pets.
In the Purebred section, Abyssinians and Dalmation cavies tend to be the most popular entrants; although there are some longhaired varieties that are popular too. If you do not have a purebred cavy, however, do not despair. There are shows for crossbred pets as well. In these competitions the judges are not as interested in the coat type or color of the pet, but rather the grooming and training of the pet.
When you enter a pet into a show, it must be clean, with trimmed nails and tangle free hair. The pet must be healthy, lean, and muscular, and it must be calm and well behaved, especially when being handled
